Texas State Hunt

I was just curious about this hunts bench show. I have never been out there in all of my years of showing, and since I will not get to go to Autumn Oaks this year I thought about tring to come out west barring everything goes okay. Does anyone know what the average number of entries for this show is? Also what kind of prizes are they giving away this year, and who may the bench show judge be this year. Thanks for any information that anyone can provide.

The entries have dropped a bit over the years, but they average about 50-60'ish. They give very nice trophies for the bench show. Guy Manning is the BSJ this year. I've only shown under him a couple times and haven't quite been able to pin preferences on him, except that he seems to really go for a more "show" type dog. And it's been MY observation he doesn't seem to be political, IE picking handlers, though i've had others say he was, it just hasn't been my experience with him. He's just hard to predict on what he's going to pick, so it could go about any way. But we'll be showing 8 so maybe he'll like at least one or two of them!

Texas State

Hey Amber....

Hope you can make Texas State but a word of caution before you come all that way...others and myself have been trying to find a motel in the area that will accept dogs...NOT A ONE will allow a dog in the room and some will not even allow a dog out on their property for a potty walk... and in 90+ degree Texas temps...it will be tough to leave one outside in a vehicle or dog box. For the life of me I cannot figure out why the TSCHA would take that event back to Fairfield where the town and business people do not try to accomodate the coonhound people who come there to spend money. In a State as large as Texas you would think they could find a town that appreciated the money we bring in to them...towns like Paris, Atlanta and Mt. Pleasant Texas have great facilities and lots of motels that allow dogs in the rooms. On top of that...the Fairgrounds as they call it really looks more like an old flea market and the fire ants have been pretty bad there in years past...I don't know how it will be this year. The show is always held outdoors under an covered livestock building with a dirt floor. I won't be coming since I cannot or will not leave my dogs out side in vehicles in those temperatures....You might be able to go to Palestine Texas and find a place that will allow dogs...it's back East of Fairfield, but a good little drive. Think I will sit this one out....Laugh! Lynn is correct on the entries for the show....usually in the 50's or 60's...Guy Manning will be fair. It's the 50th Anniversary of the Texas State Hunt and we are supplying the winners with Purina jackets and dog food and bowls and caps and all sorts of goodies....I sure hate to miss this one but it's not worth frying a dog for....

Janice

come on now!!! There are fire ants everywhere in Texas LOL.I agree there are not many motels to choose from but of all the ones there is I bet you can see hounds in the rooms at night whether it is allowed or not.I have been going to Fairfield the largest majority of those 50 years and I have found it just the opposite as to the welcome recieved and even though the grounds might look like a flea market to some at least there is plenty of shade for the hounds as well as the folks that like to just sit around to shoot the bull.Heck I thought 95% of all show rings had dirt floors LOL.There are covered buildings for all the venders so the customers don't have to shop in the sun.It is a heck of a lot better than the last couple of years at Hearne, climbing that dang hill nearly killed me LOL.And they had a dirt floor to show on also LOL.
You know having it at Fairfield is as much a tradition as have the state hunt and from the drop of attendance the last couple of years at Hearne I believe a lot of folks thought so too.
Come on down Janice,I am going to miss NOT seeing you if you don't come.
Amy if you get a chance, come on down,I think you will find it a pleasant place to be on the 5th & 6th of Sept.

Hey Pappy!

I knew you Texans would hollar at me over that post!! Laugh!!! Honestly...I have been coming to Texas State for alot of the last 25 years and usually in Fairfield there were a couple of motels that would allow dogs...this year it's been virtually impossible to find a place. I have offered pet deposits and guaranteed my dogs would be in crates at all times...but they have just told me NO! Honestly other than summer that would not be a problem but if I want to go back to the room to get out of the heat...that would mean the dogs couldn't go with me....plus...some of you who know Harold and I know that we also have "Herbie" our Toy Poodle who goes with us and they won't let him stay inside with us either....I tried that sneaking in dogs one year down there and got booted out of there and was refused a refund on the room. I had to drive to Buffalo and get another room there...don't want to go through that ever again!! I know what you mean about the "Hill" at Hearne but the motels were friendly...laugh! As far as dirt floor...I was just letting Amber know what the floor was...some dogs do better on dirt than they on concrete, etc. Sure would like to see my friends from the other side of the Red River....maybe something will work out between now and then...if not...hope you guys have a successful event!!

Janet it's not an "old" flea market it's the CURRENT flea market LOL - they have a flea market there once a month.

Amber hope to see you there - look us up. We'll be the folks with more redbones than you can shake a stick at ;0)

I liked the hearne facility since the cover was plenty big enough to have the breeders showcase, show area, and a large staging area under cover, although the pens were inconvenient to someone who was showing multiple dogs and needed to "swap out". The fairfield show area is small and you have to stand around in the hot sun waiting for your turn.

I'm not crazy about Paris show-wise because its in that enclosed building with concrete floors and again there is no place to "hold" your dogs - if you are showng multiple dogs (as we do, almost always one in every category, male and female reg, ch, and grand) there is no place to tie a dog close to the ring so you can switch them out. Atlanta wasn't much better - we had ground stakes to tie the dogs to and had planned ahead so that dwayne and I were only handling every other class - so while one of us was showing the other was getting their next dog, but that was the week it rained buckets all week, and the ground was too soft to hold the stakes, so we ended up tying our dogs to the back of the bleachers inside.

Hey Amber, My name is Janelle Parker and I'm down here in Palestine, Tx. The last Tx. State hunt I went to was 92. So we are both hitting this new. I would say that the show would be back up to the 50-60's like Lynn said. And I always had a good time even when I was young the people still treated you like an adult. I actually will show this year. I acquired a female yesterday to show. So we shall see. Anyway if you all can make it I think you would have a great time.

BSJ

Amber, I was told this last weekend by a TX STATE Board Member that we all might THINK we know who the BSJ is - that in reality they aren't telling ANYONE who will be judging. I pitched a fit about that to him & probably have cut a friendship short over the subject. I was informed that according to UKC instructions they will not announce the BSJ in advance. I emailed UKC & was told that UKC has NEVER told a club to keep the BSJ "secret." So it'll be interesting to see who judges.

I hold with what I was told, cuz I was told with a very straight and honest board member who is not the type to play games, that they selected guy manning - although Tx state HAS been known to change at the last minute....

Well, thanks for the heads up. I have always wanted to come out there for it. I had been told the same thing by someone else a few years back. I may just hede the warning and not deal with driving twelve hours out there to get beat because of politics.

But of course if one of **my** dogs win, it's not political, cuz I'm not anybody ;0). At least, I don't think I am. I set out a few years ago to find myself, but I never did..... so yep, I'm a nobody!
