Waiting the Five Minutes.

Was at a coon hunt in Eastern KY over the weekend.

Dogs A, B, and C, are treed in. Dog D is still running.

Scored the trees of Dogs A, B, and C. Judge says shine time is up. Handler for Dog D trees his dog. So the judge goes to start the five minutes on the dog and the handler for Dog D starts throwing a fit. Says we don't have to run the five minutes on Dog D We can go straight to him. Starts throwing a fit cause we won't walk to his dog before the five minutes is up. Wants to question it and everything.

What do you do run the five minutes or can you go straight to the dog?

I always thought you ran the five minutes cause our dogs are not declared treed anymore?

you don't have to wait the five the other dogs are declared treed and handeled. the only way you would run the five is if the other dogs had been recut.

I had that ? asked in a cast last friday. Same situation three dogs treed my dog was byherself. Shined their tree, when shine time was up I treed my dog. Someone said since all dogs are handled that made her the only one on the tree so all dogs were treed.

That is not the case when a dog is single you have to run the 5 minutes, now if two dogs were treed you could go strsight in.

handler for dog d is right. as long as the dogs had not been re-cast you didnt have to run the 5. as long as the dogs are still on the lead they are still considered treed. its in the august advisor column. page 56

It's amazing out of a 4 dog cast only 1 knows the rules. thats 25% pretty poor odds.

It is not necessary to wait the five minutes when three dogs are led away from a tree and the fourth guy in the cast declares his dog treed on a different tree. The cast can proceed directly to the tree. The reasoning is, because the three dogs on the leash are still technically considered treed until they are re-cast, when the fourth dog is treed, that means all dogs are treed and cast may proceed directly to the tree.

Hey Jim
the rule states to start moving to the tree stopping every few moments so other handlers can hear there dogs. I have walked within 10ft of a tree and waited for the five to end.

If other dogs are on track, I don't consider it much courtesy to be within 10 ft. of a tree.

I think if my dog is still out on track and the cast wants to stand 10 feet from the tree there will probably be a ? put on the card. The rule states you should arrive at the tree at the end of the five not wait at the tree for the five to end.

Common courtesy as a guide and judge to dogs holding strike while others are treed is to give everyone in the cast equal opportunity to hear their dog in ALL situations to the best of your ability... all the while trying to make it to the tree in 5 minutes.

If dogs are running track and a dog pulls up treed in front of the cast in a hunt, do you go running in there and stand 10 ft. away?

I hope not!

I've even backed casts away from trees within close proximity of the cast because it is SIMPLE COMMON COURTESY to the other dogs and handlers to hear and finish a track! You can walk a good 100 yards in the woods in less than a minute.

a good judge will not allow you to get ten feet from the tree with other dogs out trailing, while waiting on the 5. what is really important to remember here, is sportsmanship. the name of the UKC game is to have fun and be fair. is it fair to the others to be that close? i can't say for you, but to this moh/judge...it won't happen on my watch

Found this a little deeper in Rule 17

17. GENERAL INFORMATION:

When a dog is declared treed, Judge is not to let anyone go to the tree and start shining in less than five minutes, unless all dogs have been declared treed. This is a courtesy to other handlers and also to see that a dog will hold his tree. If at all possible, be at the tree within five (5) minutes. If handlers are so far from tree that it will take more than five minutes to get to tree, they are to start walking toward tree, but stopping all along to let other handlers see if their dog is treeing. Judge is not to let any handler keep holding him away from tree just to let dog get to tree after five minutes are up. DOG MUST HOLD THE TREE FOR FIVE MINUTES, UNLESS ALL DOGS IN CAST ARE DECLARED TREED. IF ONE DOG IN CAST, OR ONE DOG REMAINING IN CAST, DOG MUST HOLD TREE FOR FIVE MINUTES.

I guess some of you expert handlers only use the parts of the rules that will help you.
