Hog Dogs

Give Ricky Jayroe a call, he lives in Georgetown S.C. I have been with him years ago hunting Hogs with pitt bulls. He went to using some of his Redbones for Hog dogs a long time ago due to the bull dogs I think being to aggressive toward his hounds. He has been doing it for many, many years and I am sure can help you a great deal. If you can't get his phone number check some of the issues of CB. He has a stud add on his dog Elmo in there sometimes. If all else fails email me and I will get it for you, I have it at home. Take care and keep'em RED!

its pretty much the same way. find tracks and get them started. the hog track has a strong smell. it should be easier to do than coon hunting. most people here are using hounds mixed with other dogs b/c they are wanting silent trail dogs. they only want them to bark when bayed or maybe a few barks on track. we started our pup running rabbits (or chickens) and then trained them pretty much like a deer dog.

i have a blue pit that will run a track silent, but she wont bay much she will just catch.
a lot of people are scared of working with pits though b/c they can be a little aggressive. you have to spend a lot of time with them...they are as good a dog as their trainer makes them!

she has ran rabbits, coon (she will tree a coon-but wont open her mouth just gets up on the tree like a coon dog and waits until you come), and even deer.

most of the time the plain ole mutts make the best hoggers b/c they are cheap and will usually have enough grit to make it.

I spend most of my time running hogs with Walkers...there's nothing in the world like it.

A couple of suggestions off the top of my head...

*Try to find someone in your area that has penned hogs. This is a good introduction to the game for the pups.

*Subscribe to magazines such as Bayed Solid and Boarhunter. It will give you more info than I care to type here.
