bought an old ranger with 2.3 seemed to run fine when I looked at it. It ran out of gas that day now it will only idle under any acceleration it bogs down pops and cracks like its out of time but it will fire right up and idle fine..... checked fuel filter and it wasn't all gunked up... of course guy I got it from had no problems with it so don't know if its a recurring problem.... anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance

Gas lines?
It's possible that the increased flow is creating a vacuum effect and the gas line may be old and not able to retain it's diameter and compresses which restricts gas flow?

Thats just a guess?

Could be the mass air sensor in an older ford. It is something that can pop up out of the blue. It will rob you of all power and make you think you have a piece of junk. Once changed, you will think you have a new truck. Just an educated guess from experience. Used to be a couple hundred to replace.

check your fuel pressure. if it has electric fuel pump, running it out of gas can overheat the pump or maybe allow the pickup tube to suck up some particulate.

pull valve cover cam check cam fowlers been years since i worked on them 2.3 but real problem soft camshaft

MAKE IT SIMPLE , ENGINES NEED, AIR FUEL AND SPARK, BACK FIRING COULD BE BECUASE OF RESTRICETED AIR FLOW, SO CHECK YOUR EXHAUST , DISCONNECT THE CONVERTER AND START IT IF IT FIXES THE PROBLEM THERE YOU GO IF NOT THEN YOU NEED TO START WITH EMISSIONS AND SPARK CHECK YOU DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR AND PLUGS AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE IT IN THE RIGHT FIRING ORDER, BUT I WOULD BET THAT WITH THE PROBLEM YOU DESCRIBED THAT YOU HAVE RESTRICTED EXHAUST OR YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR CAP ROTOR , PLUGS , OR WIRES, WHICH COULD BE YOUR FIRING ORDER,
