How many of you think UKC schould adapt to the countdown rule? And get it the way it schould be?

I feel they should start the countdown rule as soon as they do away with circled slick trees. Either plus or minus unless it's a den tree. Those quick slick treeing idiots would gradually be gone.

Trevor, it doesn't matter how many of us are in favor of a countdown. Fact is this one has been polled on here several times and an overwelming majority is always in favor of the tree points countdown. But it cannot be changed without getting the Breed Assiciations on board. This rule change was propsed and put on the ballot in 2006. It was proposed by the TWB&FA. The Walker guys guys voted in favor. All five of the other breed associations voted against it. The proposal failed 5-1 against.

Well

Well you are correct blue. Often circled trees schould be minused. but theres just so many factors when a dog trees on a tree. it seems that once summer time hits all these guys start showing up to the hunts pretty much knowing there not going to get minused even if its a sapling and judges need to do a better job of minusing these so called "circle trees"

I was in a hunt at Jeromesville Ohio last Saturday night and i let a slick tree go un-munused and it came back to bite me in the last few minutes of the hunt and i hope the guy with the dog reads this and knows how undeserving of that win he was. His dog did do a good job but 1 slick tree pretty much kills a cast.

Cut 1 (3 dog cast) Walker dog struck for 100 followed by a redbone then me with last strike. Walker trees then the redbone backs it. we shined there tree and circled it. we then proceeded to start the 8 on my dog and i treed him. we shined his tree and found it. So now ive got 175+ and the other two have circle points.

Cut 2 the walker strikes for 100 followed by the redbone and the walker trees for 125 followed by the redbone for 75. I then strike with a line under it and tree him split. Found there coon and found mine. Now i have 350+ followed by the walker with 225+ and then the redbone with 150+

Cut 3 I srtuck for 100 followed by the walker then the redbone. The walker trees for 125 then the redbone for 75. Start walkin in there and i tree my dog for 50 but i knew he was split but it wasnt rilly obvious. we get in there and the redbone is with my dog so they bump him up to 125 and me 75 which its obvious what had happened the redbine came to my dog but nothin i could do about it. we shined the trees together and the walker was on a sapling. we immediatley found ours and the guy that hunted the walker dog said well im guna circle it and i wasnt concerned cuz i had a 300 point lead so i let him do it because there was only 36 minutes left in the hunt. Needless to say the next cut he had 2nd strike and first tree and the redbone was shut out but backed him for 75 and we found it then re cast them to my dog and he got treed with 10 minutes left and had the coon and that beat me and won the hunt by far. I ended up with 525+ and he had 575+

So i hope somebody will read this and not let it happen to them.

i like it the way it is but i could care less which way it is. i just go out & call my dogs for what they do & let the chips fall were they fall. if i get beat by a dog that covers all night. i'l shake the mans hand & be back next week !! its just a different stratagy in hunting ether way. i hunt very independent dogs & i seen a bunch of times i was glad it was not a count down & i seen a bunch of times i wish there was & so has every body else !!

i would much rather have dogs covering than have dogs going a mile to start to hunt 3 different directions & ruin a hunt. i go to the hunts to have fun not spend the night walking all over the country to a bunch of idiot dogs that hunt like this. i'm gettin a little older & dont want to just walk all night to bunch of split trees. so if your dog covers all night & wins thats OK by me. i'l be back next week !!

Split Trees

I love how guys make it seem that just because a dog split trees it has to go a mile to do it. that's beyond me. Here in Ohio theres pleanty of coon a good dog will get split easily without walking anywhere near a mile.

That's correct. Just about everytime I've split in Ohio it's been less than a couple hundred yard walk. Most times it's within a few hundred feet!

Me tooers

Regardless of wheather i get beat by a mee too dog. How can the owner of the dog be proud of the win? it makes no sense to me why someone would bring a mee too dog to a hunt. I understand these hunts are to have fun but how is bringing a dog like that to a hunt fun? JMOP but if i had a dog that backed more then once a night then i would kill it and there would be a ton of better dogs out there if thats what everyone else would do regardless of breed.

Just because a dog gets first tree has little to do with which dog treed the coon unless they did it by themselves. Many of the tree grabbers would have been treed three times and never treed the coon if it hadn't been for a track dog.

ohiothunder, the next time your dog comes in & backs a dog you need to withdraw & beat the hell out of your dog & beg the other hunters to please dont tell any one what your dog did !! if your dog is all that, next time you get beat in a hunt by a me too dog take that dog home & snap a cap in his head !! why would you worry about a dog that cant get a 1st tree? i wish i could draw dogs all the time that could not get a 1st tree !!

before you start belittling peoples dogs you better be glad they come to the hunts & spend their money the same as you & support your local clubs !! its people like you that run alot of folks off making them think they dont belong !! i'v hunted with some that was suppose to be the best, you know what their just a dog. i aint seen one walk on water yet !!

exactly

not to get in the argument, but i don't care how sorry the dog is or what it does (as long as it isn't mean), bring it to the hunts!! Even if you know you won't win!! support our sport and clubs!!

I do like the countdown though. I was in a nite ch cast recently where my dog was treed with the coon for over 2 mins before the other 3 dogs backed him. Not a big deal, but i definitely like the countdown. If it takes your dog 3 minutes to cover a dog, he only deserves 25+

The next time that any of you have a good dog that you are going to kill just because he will tree with another dog please just send it to me. I don't need a better dog at the moment but that could change and I could always sell them.

Why would you want a dog to cover after a minute? It obviously did no work to get there. Unless it is just that slow on the ground, then it probably doesn't need to be in a hunt anyways. I like winning hunts by my dog treeing coons that it started and finished. If she doesn't tree first she isn't going to be there. And she wins around 80 to 85% of the casts she is in, with any kind of company. Don't know why a man would want points for his dog not doing any work? Thats how a lot of these counterfeit Nite Ch and Gr Nite are made. There is nothing worse than towards the end of the cast your dog needs to get by itself and have a coon, but it just goes and covers. I would rather lose a cast by treeing coons by myself than win with a covering dog. Because more than likely the independent dog will win more hunts in the long run. JMO.

countdown

I am like many, completely in favor of the countdown rule. I think a dog that backs another dog 4 and 1/2 mins into the tree should not get 75 they should only be able to go in for 25. It would make handlers call there dog for what they are doing alot faster instead of in a situation where there are only 2 dogs treeing and the handler is letting them "settle in" for 4 mins. I love a dog that split trees. Not one that wont tree with or back other dogs but one that likes to split. I live in the southern tip of ohio and we have thin coon so we often have splits that take along time to walk to. Thats fine by me, thats coonhounds being coonhounds. It does hurt for a dog to split in areas of thick populated areas because of lower scores due to increased walking time and shining time. I will never think bad of a dog for going deep and getting by itself with a coon if other dogs are treed empty. I dont mind walking if theres something to look at when I get there.

Very well said. I also completley agree with the countdown rule. My guess is within 6 to 8 years UKC will say enough is enough and change it. Its the way it should have been from the start ! It just makes sense and for all other people that oppose the countdown rule you can pretty much guatrantee what kind of dog there packing. So many people like a dog to cover well if you want to hunt something that packs hunt beagles
