Want To Learn How To Coonhunt but....

I don't know squat about how. The only thing I know about coonhunting is from reading "Where the Red Fern Grows" as a child over 20 years ago. When I read some of these posts I am able to get some information from it, but most of the time I am still lost. I assume that Casting is when you release the dog to hunt. I think "Getting Stuck" is when they have a racoon treed, "Deep Stuck" I can only guess at.

Is there a book out there that someone like me who is almost completely ignorent on the sport, like myself, can read and at least get an understanding on how to do it? The internet sites I have found are for people that already know how to do it, and they don't cater to a 30 year old neophyte wanna learn about coonhunter.

I realize that there is a huge difference in reading about something and actually doing it, but at least it would give me some foundation to start with so when I find someone who would be willing to teach me I'm not completely ignorent.

Learning to coonhunt is done through the "school of hard knocks". Your first dog will teach you more than your 6th grade teacher did. Search around for John Wicks volume I and II books. They are for beginers and veteran hunters. Good Luck and have fun, once you have the bug its a disease.

Yes John Wicks "Walk with Wick" book does have info on Aids for dogs. Im pretty sure it does anyhow. Go to www.huntsmart.com and look up the walk with wick book and they have both volumes for $39 or so. Really good information.
Something else you could do is look up in the UKC events section an find a coonhound club close to you. Go to a hunt and start asking questions. Some one will be willing to let you tag along and you could make new friends.

Go out with someone first to make sure it's right for you. Not a sport for the average joe blow. Make a a new post looking to go for your area. Then go from there.
Good luck,
Scott

yeah you have to go out first...reading builds it up but your either gonna get the bug or your gonna say " why in the heck do these idiots do this!" my suggestion is instead of a book drive down the road and find an old boy thats been doing 30-40 years. he will point you in the right direction.

I'm planning on finding someone that will let me tag along. I wont be home for another 7 months, so all I can do is read about it in books and online.

Until then I appreciate everyone's pointers, and patience with what may seem ignorent questions when I ask them on here.

And because football season is 2 and a half months away "Go Big Red" to all my fellow Husker fans.
