trainer to break dog from deer

i'm considering finding someone to break my dog from deer. i've tried using a shocking collar but good training situations just don't happy. i can't tell she's after a deer until it's too late, if at all. i have a none deer hunter will come back and i know then that she's after a deer and i shock her but she gets by with it too often. i need someone that is set up with a deer in a pen that can release my dog on it and break her. do any of you know of something like that, perferable in north carolina. btw, this deer dog is a stephens cur.

Should be easy, just find a field in the evening with deer in it. Cut the dog loose and if it opens, or even shows interest and starts chasing the direction they went, shock the dog. You can even walk the dog on a leash into the area you saw the deer, and jerk them hard if they start snorting and tail wagging on deer scent. I yell and snap, and so NO, you get out of there!

I find deer are easier to break off, because for me it's easier to setup the situation. Coyote are harder because it's harder to control the setup...and I cant seem to ever catch one in a cage when I really need one!

i'm aware of the technique you described. the problem with it is around here there are very few fields where i might spot deer. the ones in the forest are too thick. if i could drive down country roads spoting deer i would but it's grown up so much that next to every field is a crop of new houses with a bunch of busy body liberials trying to mind my business.
i know a man that owns a billy goat, a big one. i'm thinking i can put the dog in the pen with the goat for a few days and see if that helps.

I'm guessing by your name on here you hunt croatan..if so you might know the place and roads I'm thinking of..coming off of highway 58 just south of maysville where you can make that left turn on a paved road that turns into gravel that goes all the way though croatan..I'm guessing you know hot to get to the waterfowl impoundment part going that way? anyway back when I lived in nc and hunted croatan I used to see alot of deer at night on the dirt roads going back to the waterfowl impoundment and the roads around it.not saying they still hang out in that area now as its been a few years since I lived and hunted there.but might be able to find some along though there to try and use to break your dog from deer.
also if you know where the holly shelter game lands is the road that goes into it off of highway 17 has a few openings along it where I used to see deer alot of the time at.

phantom, you're right about the croatan. i'm in it most days or nights. i don't think the deer population is as high as it once was. i almost never see deer on the dirt roads. i almost never see deer at any of the roads here. i have hunted the maple hill area and there are more deer there but it's farther away too.

croatankid
used to I'd see all kinds of animals back in there on my way to hunting.if I remember right there was alot more deer at the other place to back then.I lived almost in the middle of the two places.was 36 miles to croatan and 35 miles to hollyshelter for me.just depended on what kind of woods I felt like being in as to where I'd go.seems like hollyshelter was more swampy and woods that had to crawl though some places.

Jim Wales is the best I've found by far!! Had my dog for 30 days and she is scared to death of a deer now. She was a stubborn one too. Problem is I don't know if Michigan is too far for ya. I know he's worth it though. If you PM me I can tell ya more and his contact info
