I lost a female hound on July 2, 2003. Put adds in the paper and made lots of contacts. NO HOUND. Today my wife calls and reports that she believes she has located the dog some 30 miles from where it was lost in a city humane center (dog pound). I described ID points and it sounds like the female. This pound had taken the dog in from another city on August 4 after they had kept her for 10 - 14 days. If it's mine I guess I will be lucky to get her back. The first pound that had the dog is some 15 miles from where the dog was lost while hunting.

I will check the dog out after work today.

However, the pound management reports that this dog belongs to them after a lenght of time and they require she be spaded before adoption. I would like input on actions I might take to keep this from happening, if it's my hound. What should I do today if the hound is mine?

We adopted a cat from the pound. They gave us a slip to HAVE her spayed.

If they do the same thing there, just don't have her spayed!

They will give you a spay/neuter slip for you to take to a Vet and the Vet is to fill it out. Just don't go to the Vet and have it done. Once the og is in your possession again it is yours!!!!

Do you have the paperwork on the dog and or any old pictures of you and the dog together?

I would NOT follow through with it no matter what threats they make.

I also wouldn't comply.Tell them what they want to hear until you get the dog.Once you get the dog,oh well.I seriously doubt they would win if they took you to court.

Didn't you have your name and phone number on the dog? If so, why wasn't you contacted? I would think there would be something there if that information was on the dog and no attempt was made to contact you.

Dang humane society nazi's. There are still a few decent shelters out there, but most of them are wacko's that would rather give up their lives than let a dog be kept outside. You might want to leave out the part that you are a hunter, or you might never get your dog back.

It was another dead end. The female in the shelter wasn't mine. I know one thing for sure. I have a tracking collar ordered and won't turn a dog loose again without it being on. Yea, I know I should of purchased one years ago. Sure hate to loose a good one like that female, she was just 11 monthts and comming on strong. I do have a litter mate that sure is making a nice hound so, the pain isn't as bad.

I have hunted for thirty years and have always hunted hounds that get deep and only wants to see you when you arrive at the tree. I have lost hounds for an hour or two but find them trailing or treed.

i haven't dealt with a pound very much but the one around here will publish pictures in a weekly trader of their new dogs and if you find a cur or hound type dog you want and tell them you want it for hunting they will over look the spay/ neauter thing, but if the dog belonged to me i would tell them and be nice about it and if that didn't work i would just go in and take the dog as if they where thieves.

This is where the DNA slip would come in handy, or copies of the photos shot at SS on PKC papers, with no other forms of ID it will be hard, maybe some signed affidatas, if the dog is yours. I wish you the best of luck.

If it is your dog congrats. But ignore there slips for spaying the shelters are getting a little too strict with there rules last year they wouldnt let my wife adopt a cat because when asked she told them my DOGS wernt spayed or neutred and didnt care when she told them they were purebred redbones and beagles . All I can figure is that they were scard I was going the try bredding a coonhound that could climb a tree better than the coon.lol If I could add a little monkey in there too no coon would be safe.

You may want to consider some option of permanent identification. ie: tattoo, freeze brand or micro chip. Most pounds and vets have a scanner they run over a dogs back when they come in to see if they are chipped or not. Good Luck.
