Another quick bench question...

Some of y'all had some good advice when I asked about how to correct a pup when he's leaning sideways on the bench. I worked with a new prospect for the first time today, and she seems to lean her body backwards. I've also noticed my male Walker leaning forward sometimes now. I know there has to be a trick to correct this, but I've tried a few things with no luck. Any suggestions?

Leaning back, what worked for me.... gently pull her tail until it makes her lean back more and eventually she will straighten up.

And leaning too foward, pull the skin on the dogs chest and will make him lean back a little. although i personally would be more concerned with the one leaning back.

For the one pulling back - yes, pulling gently on the tail works to make them lean forward. You can also stand them with their back feet right at the back edge of the bench - even with the big pad of the foot hanging slightly over the edge, and it will encourage them to lean forward.
For the one leaning forward, I would just move the front feet further forward until the front leg is straight up and down, leave the back feet where they are, and make sure your leash is loose so that the dog is not leaning into it.
As with anything, praise or treat for small improvements, and then gradually raise your standards.
Good luck!
Laurie

Pull the dog the same direction its leaning like pulling the tail backgrounds if the dog is leaning back, its so much easier (in my experience) to correct a dog that leans forward by grabbing by the front of the chest and pulling forward. I never have good luck with the ones leaning back lol unless working them off the back of the bench right before a show. Good luck!!

Head!

A dogs balance is in the head! make sure it is square with the dog and not stuck in the air!

Thanks guys. I suspect the dog leaning backwards on me will get out of that once she's been on the bench a little more. I just brought her home Thursday, and to my knowledge she's never been worked before. On a brighter note she's already pretty good about not moving her feet too much when I place them. I'll definitely give your tips a try though!

take you a piece of left over meat out when working it
hold it a about 3 inches from her nose and see if she
will move foward.
