I have never used it in mountains, but it has worked just fine for me in vegetation so thick it might as well be called a jungle

They work fine in the mountains in summertime. I'm in the eastern Kentucky mountains and the garmin is all I use. I would recommend a truck mount or long range hand held antenna in case the dogs cross the hill on you. Signal is often lost if the dogs cross a hill but the truck mount or hand held antenna will pick them back up.

Garmin and Leaves

I have a couple spots that I hunt that you can't see the sky once you go in there seriously, and last night he went 979 yrds to tree one and it never lost signal.Go ahead and get one you want be sorry, and the best thing about it is they cut down on your hunt time going to the dogs and to the truck is much easier with them.

I notice today that I lost GPS signal --I never lost signal to collar just the GPS ---I had [2] RED bars and than they would come back full green bars --when this happens it didn't read the mileage right --it act like it stuck on mileage when you had RED bars --on your 220----I was watching the beagle make laps running the rabbit and the distance never change when you had the RED bars ----has anyone had this to happen to them

I was standing out in the opening-- in a picked corn field --it was overcast and a light rain
