Genetics and Breeding Question

I was thinking about genetics last night and got to thinking about English dogs even though Im a Walker man through and through. English dogs are the only dogs that when you breed a red and white stud to a red and white dam you will get one, sometimes two blue colored pups in the litter. Now those blue colored pups had to come from some dog in its third or even up to its 6th generation. So my question is to guys who have raised their own English dogs for generations. Do these blue pups end up acting just like the Blue stud that was within its 6 generation pedigree? If so it would somewhat unlock a pattern as to when the traits of certain dogs will pop out within the generations.

I am not an english breeder, but I am a student of genetics. Color is not linked to ability. For the scenario you desribe to work, color and ability would have to be linked.

If I wasn't a walker fancier, I would love to experiment with the english breed. I love the idea of selecting for ability without concern of color. I think the english breed has fewer color restraints than the other breeds.

our milk hauler(80maybe 81 yrs.old) lifelong houndsman

tells me he bred mostly crossbred hounds,,,,,, if they were opposite colored dogs he says that a very high percentage would turn out to hunt generally the same as their like colored parents...as usual there is no ALWAYS WITH DOGS HE SAYS ALSO!!! its not that they were that particular color just that they carried more traits of that particular parent!!

The Bluetick breed seperated from english breed in 1946 I think. Alot of that coloring can come from farther back than 6 gen. If I cross certain blueticks too close, I can get a few redtick pups, have seen it quite a bit, with no redticks remotley close on papers. As far as unlocking this and that, I dont know, I think a man could live and breed hounds for 200 years and still have some questions.
