Attn. Allen G. and Todd K.

I have a concern. While on a cast I was participating in something happened that bothers me. All 4 dogs strike and 2 dogs get treed about 500 yards from the truck into the woods. The third dog is handled at the tree and the tree is scored. The guide's dog is the one still out. The 8 minutes is started. Before the 8 is up the guide goes ahead and takes his minus, calls timeout and the hour is started for the time to find the dog and rejoin the cast. The guide takes his truck and begins looking for his dog. While he is gone one of the spectators that had remained at the truck said the the guide's spectator had the Garmin on at the truck while the cast was in the woods. The spectator told the guide where the dog was and the guide went ahead and took his minus and went to locate his dog. Now I know that this can also be done with a tracking system as well but I also know that it is wrong to turn a locating device on while time is in. The problem is that if a spectator brings up a point like this it is not good because spectators are not to have any impact on the cast. I guess I'm saying all this to make the point that if this continues to be a concern then maybe all spectators should be required to stay with the cast to prevent this type of violation from being a problem.

If you leave it on in the truck with a spectator that is abusing the fact that you can leave it on.

jda is correct. Rule 20 states that ANYONE using a locating device during time in is subject to disbarrment. During timeout, anyone can use the locating device to gather dogs.

I think if the spectator didn't bring up the location of the dog until after the guide had called time out then no harm and he didn't assist until time was out,but if he told the guide where the dog was during hunting time someones in for a timeout from UKC.

It makes no difference Travis. The rule is very specific. If the tracker is used by ANYONE while time is in, they are barred.

JiM, is the spectator or the cast participant subject to being barred?

Both. The participant is responsible for their spectators actions.

i still don't see the problem jim, that seems like you're stretching that rule to cover something it doesn't. are you gonna bar my pet monkey for sitting in the truck watching my garmin? i cant control what my monkey does when im in the field is my monkey really even a spectator sitting in the truck?

what if somebody else pleasure hunting nearby picks up my collar transmission is he barred am i barred?

im confused you have me worried i could be barred for all kinds of crazy garmin things now. im gonna sell my garmin now, GARMIN IS THE DEVIL!

I think you should run that past Allen.
Here is what the rule says....""Any person caught useing any device used to control or locate dog during hunting time , will be barred indefinately."
"Anyone" to me means whoever gets caught useing the device no matter if it is a cast member, spectator or someone staying at the truck.
"will be" to me means they are barred if caught. No if's, and's or maybe's.

Mike, this isn't a "GARMIN" rule. The rule covers Garmin. Tracker, QuickTrack,Wildlfe units, TriTronics, Sportdog. etc. "any device used to control or locate".

I don't want anyone to get into trouble. I don't think that this was done in way that had any bad intent or anything. I don't think that they realized the magnitude of the situation. I do believe however that something may have to be done in order to keep this from becoming a major issue. Maybe a rule insertion that requires spectators to remain with cast members so that this would not be so easy to do. As I mentioned in an earlier post, this same concept is possible with a tracking system. This may have been going on in a lot of casts but it's the first time that I know of it happening on a cast that I've been on.

Bullet, if you don't want anyone to get in trouble, you might consider reading rule 20 to the handler who's spectator was tracking the dog during hunting time and then offer them the opportunity to withdraw their dog since they have obviously comitted a scratch offense. They can politely excuse themselves from the hunt or you can take it to the MOH. Now you have given them a chance to do the right thing and avoid the embarrassement of getting barred.

BEST WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS TO STATE THE RULE AS "ALL" TRACKING, TRAINING DEVICES AND CELL PHONES NEED TO BE TURNED OFF DURING HUNTING TIME.

ITS AS EASY AS THAT.

"any device used to locate or control".....that would seem to cover about everything you can use to know where a dog is.

JiM, the outcome was similar to what you described. He did withdraw the dog.
