Yep, we microchip all our dogs and pups. I'll have to go look at the ordering information tomorrow. If you're used to doing your own shots it's not too much more difficult.

I use the AVID chips. Here is the webpage for AVID: http://www.microchipidsystems.com/

The important thing with chips is to register them with PETtrac (or HomeAgain or whoever) with your contact info and keep that info current! Without that, the chip is not much good.

I used AVID, as I could get the chips and do a multi-dog registration for less than $20/dog.

I did not buy a scanner, but make sure that I scan the chips before putting one in a dog. I also scan just to check on them when I take a dog to the vet for anything.

.

just go online and google micro-chipping and it will take you to a bunch of options... and yes you can do it yourself and a lot cheaper! My only other suggestion is take the dog(s) to a rep. vet @ a week later and make certain it didnt work its way out. My vet did my chip and wanted me to do this just for conformation. Most cased you just call and ask if you can scan them and you dont have to pay for an office call either : ) Hope this helps. Sandi

A little super glue over the needle hole works wonders.

I'm not kidding, my vet suggested this to me last time.

yes on the superglue works well. my wife chips all our dogs, we use avid, once lost a show pom of hers and it turned up 186 miles away on the west side of michigan a week later, lucky that the vet over there makes it a practice to scan all new dogs coming in to his office. Also it would help if county animal control would have a dual scanner to check all pets it picks up.

We do our hound, beagles, and Chessies. Almost every shelter has a multi reading scanner now. Generally they scan every dog coming in. It's also good to scan your dog once a year to see if the chip has moved, since sometimes they migrate a little.

We got a pup that needed to be chipped, so I bought five more chips from AVID. I took them over to the shelter to get them scanned when the box arrived. Had to laugh, the animal control guy says he scans all the chips they use first, too.
