I am interested in starting to coon hunt. I am origionaly from out west and grew up hunting mountain lion and bear. We used extreamly cold nosed dogs out there and i have been told that a cold nosed dog is less than desirable out here in Indiana due to the large number of coons. Is this so? Can anyone out there give me some training sudgestions on how to tain apup, and recomend a breed. I dont know much about any breeds other than blue ticks.

One thing you'll find in Indiana is plenty of clubs. Find a local club and attend a few night hunts. Someone will be glad to help you out and take you hunting. Cold nose, hot nose whatever, these are all preferences and you should just hunt with a few folks and decide what you like. As far as breeds go.... it's just color. Whatever style of hound you want you can find a line in any breed that will give you what you like. I met some great guys when I lived in Indiana and they helped me out alot with hounds. They run lots of Briar Creek English so I got kinda' partial to them.... but like I said you can find whatever you want in any of the "breeds". They're really all the same breed with different colors. I'm sure you'll have little to no problem finding someone in Indiana to take you hunting, lots of real nice houndsmen there. Good luck.

My buddy that spured my intrest owns english. I hear allot of good things about the breed. Deffinetly considering. Would it be to difficult for someone with no coon hunting experiance to train a pup? Should i get a started or established hound first. Definetly would not be as rewarding. I dont want to start off on the wrong foot though.

I hunt coon and lions. I have a bluetick that can run a lion track on dirt 25 to 30 hrs old. I have had him in several night hunts. From hunting with other coon dogs I have found he has more of a medium nose. It sounds funny but lion hunting and coon hunting are very different, but the dogs aren't. I know a lot of lion hunters that hunt registerd coon hounds. Some registered dogs that are doing well in the coon hunts can run a 3 day old lion track and some can only run one that is 10 to 20 hours old. I don't know that any of this matters. I figured I would let you know the hounds you used to hunt and comp coonhounds can be the same type hounds. Certainly not always, but more than you might think. So just pick the breed you like and find a well bred pup and a hunting buddy and you're ready to go.

Robbie if you are just getting started it would make things much easier to just buy a broke dog or nicely started hound. Just my 2 pennies worth.

Check out the Farmers and Conservation Coon Club down in Silver Lake. The have a nice club house and quit a few hunts and shows going on. They also have some nice people that would be good to help you out. wmagicwebb on here is a member and could give you more info about joining and hunts and also about any kinda dog you would want to know about...
