just wondering what is the best way to get a dog to hold still either on the bench or on the ground i myself think practice makes perfect whats your thougts.

I agree.........practice is the best way along with encouragment when they do well. Lots of hugs and pats on the head and a bite of steak or two does wonders! Good luck!

I'm working on a 6 month old Walker that's the first dog I've started on the bench "from scratch". Lucky for me he LOVES to do whatever makes me happy, so I haven't had too much trouble with him on the bench yet. I've found I get better results when I let him out to play for awhile before we start working on the bench-that way he's not wanting to play when he gets up there. The first time I put him up I got him to stand like a statue just by placing his feet in about the places they needed to be, and when he moved I told him "no" firmly. He's been on the bench MAYBE 10-15 times, and he will already stand where I've placed him with his head up and not moving for a minute or so, both on the ground and the bench. I always give him the same commands on the bench-for example, when I set him up and want him to stay posed I say "stand" and when I need to remind him to keep his head up I move it with my hand and say "head up." Of course you could probably say whatever you want as long as you're consistent!

When my older dogs that already know the drill want to be stubborn and move their feet, I use a trick someone taught me a couple months ago-flipping them over on their backs really fast and leaning down over them while I say "no." It doesn't hurt them, just gets their attention, and when they get back up they're ready to cooperate. That's as physical as I like to get with my dogs-any more and they just really won't enjoy getting on the bench. And of course once their practice is done they get lots of love and a few treats.... I'm definitely not an expert, but those things have worked for me!

to go beyond a good shaking with my left hand, under the head. two pups i trained, are on the so eng days post now. if either one of them had ever been flipped over backwards, they wouldn't be standing in those photos. my opinion. if you want them to respond? even when wired...then turn loose and let them run it off. when working on the bench i don't allow sitting and give no treats. i work a relaxed environment and use a t.v. or radio for noise. especially behind them. i believe in a relaxed dog and not a nervous, anxious one. grooming plays a BIG role in my training as well. each hound is different and each one responds in a different way. some stand natural from day one. and some need daily work, sometimes more in a day, than others. i physically lift my dogs down and don't like them to jump down. i praise after they are on the ground. then i turn them loose! and usually they are all tail wagging and sometimes go back and put paws up on bench or jump back up. LOL! then i know we have worked as a team. and that is my reward. these are just a few things i have found successful for me. a gentle hand and a firm voice go a LONG ways! my opinion. but there are those that think swatting, flipping and poking are the way to go. more power to em...this works for me and mine.....

I also use almost all of the same methods that you use with your dogs. I figured somebody would have something to say about putting them on their back. No, it's not something you can do to all dogs and still keep them relaxed on the bench. I don't personally employ that method on EVERY dog that I own, and I use it as a last resort on the ones that I do. Each one of my dogs is different personality-wise, and they all require different types of discipline. A couple of them will look downright ashamed if you so much as raise your voice, and a couple need a firmer hand every now and then. One thing is certain though- anybody that has seen me interact with my animals, be it horses or hounds, knows that I have an extremely positive relationship with each one. As a matter of fact every single animal I own, down to our pack of deer dogs, is pampered more than the average pet. In return I expect them to respect me and do their job as they have been taught. It's obvious my hounds aren't "abused" in any way, shape, or form. Once they have been corrected and perform as desired they are immediately rewarded, and no matter what they leave their training session with tails wagging and ready for more. Not trying to sound defensive, just don't want anyone jumping down my throat and saying I'm too hard on my dogs!

If you just want to see some pictures of my dogs on the bench, here you go. They don't look perfect by any means (like I said, I'm still learning) but I'm happy with where they are at so far and I'm having a lot of fun with them.


My red dog...perfect example of one you can't be too firm with. I'm putting her through a 6 week basic obedience class in a few weeks to try to bring her out of her shell a little. She's great at home, but in the past 6 months or so she seems to have created an aversion to strange men. This was taken a few months ago before she started learning how to stay on her toes in the back.


Our old Walker posing on my truck after a good night of hunting. He's a true coon dog first and foremost, but every now and then I'll bench him at the local clubs just for fun.


This is my newest addition, who is a CCH GRCH. I believe this picture was at the beginning of her class at the SC State show earlier this month.

The only ones I'm lacking pictures of right now are my other blue female and my little Walker. Nobody is usually home when I get out to practice, so it's rare that I get somebody to take pictures! Like I said, my dogs aren't perfect by any means and all of us are still novices except for Gypsy I'm having a ton of fun showing this year though, and every time I show I learn something new.

If you want to see a nice looking Walker on the bench you need to ask Laura to post a picture of Sweetie when she had her at her place. Of course I'm partial to blue dogs, but she sure is a good looking one!

i've witnessed physical abuse first hand by so called big time show people. knocking a dog side ways off the bench. real good for impact injuries and a few jarred teeth. or the pulling the tail backwards...nice for a sore tail and rear. or how about one of those wire stripping brushes for removing paint. walker days, saw this poor dog getting hit on his side and thought "lady. i'd like to smack your rib cage." or dragging around on a riding lawnmower to teach to lead. or how about hitting in the head with a 2 x 4 and pushing teeth through the gum! yep...there are some cruel people around and all for the glory of a trophy. whatever it takes, as short a time as it takes....there are no fast and complete training methods. it really requires hard work and dedication. and if you hunt the same hound? it takes more added time as well. tips for training methods don't work for all hounds or all people. but a gentle hand still holds more rewards. my opinion....

back....put left hand between front legs and lightly pull forward. squeezing under the rib cage is ok...but some do it too hard. dog will flinch. i've noticed judges pushing down on the back...doesn't prove a thing. LOL! the top line is what it is. LOL! but push hard enough and you make a dog look swayback or sagging. the idea is a gradual slope from top of the shoulder (withers) to the tail. not an arch up roach appearance like a bedlington terrier. and whippets aren't roached!!! they have a tremendous loin for running and turning. they are fast! a good tuck can make a hound look nicer across the back as well. don't over feed or over water just before a show.

if you would like to study a good topline...pull one of penny caudill's plott photos up. i have noticed this on alot of the plotts she has, or handles.

Don't worry Reddog, even the couple of mine who have been to the bigger shows can get a little nervous now and then! My fiance probably hates it, but I'm notorious for showing up early for the shows so the dogs (and me haha) have time to calm down.

Don't get down if you get beat at some of the bigger shows. I'm as competitive as they come and I HATE to lose haha, but so far losing more than I've won at the big ones hasn't discouraged me yet. Like at Walker Days, I showed my GRCH with 3 other dogs in the class. It really came down to my blue dog and a Walker that has won at EVERY major show so far this year. I considered it a small victory that the judge took a good bit of time deciding who the winner would be between Gypsy and the dog that won. Hey, at least we weren't so totally outclassed that we made it easy for them! If you're doing most of your showing at local shows I bet you'll do fine. As long as you're having fun that's what matters anyway. The more you do it the more you and your dogs will learn.
