What do y'all do with young dogs that tend to not have the drive to tree? Im not talking pups, I'm talking, 1-2 yr old dogs. I got a female here that is trying my patients. She has treed some with an older dog. But hasn't in so long I can't remember how well she treed to be honest. I had plenty of ideas but have pretty much exhausted them all. Dont show interest in a cage coon much, but I did get her kind of worked up enough to tree but had to use the old dog. Turn the coon loose and she will run it. But has a hard time locating the coon. Will check trees, but then will continue to keep looking for a track. Even with an old dog there. Will run track with them but after the old dog trees, she will keep milling around looking for a track. Has tasted more than plenty coon, I think, and been hunted probably 50 nights. Enough she should know what is going on. Buddy has a male littermate that is almost an exact replica of her. Anyone have any ideas?? Drop it on me, I will give anything a shot.
I did put some feeders out last wk but havent hunted them yet. Drove around with the other pup wed night and turned him on 3 coon crossing the road. The first he treed. But I say he did because it went up right on the right-a-way, and we were right there to encourage him and he treed some, but kept wanting to mill and look for track. After that he would run them, maybe locate and be off looking for a track by the time we got there and never go back.
Myself, If mine dont pick up quick, she will be culled. Dont know how much more my buddy will take before he will probably take the same road.

Have you shot or shook the coon out to the pup ?
That's about the first thing I try to do, I get one on the ground and let it whoop the tar out of the young dog.... Then after the old dogs or you kill it. Hang it in a tree just high enough for the pup to see it..After it trees for a minute let he pup have it for just a few seconds, then put it back in the tree... That's what I do... But like you stated, the other litter mate has the same problem, it could be the lack of tree power...

Shelby, done that more than once. This dog was hunted better than 30 nights during season with a seasoned vet. Just didnt seem to click, not like it should have anyway. Probably seen 25 coon this past season.
I think you may be right Jay. I thought I would give someone a shot at giving me an idea or two that I possibly havent tried. Although, the end result will probably still be the same.
I never ever seen that coming. Tree power was never anything that was a lack with this cross. Seems to be in these two pups though. Got one out of a younger litter/different sire. If they are the same way, she wont be bred again. Guess some just dont produce their likeness. Although we hate to see that, its just the cold hard truth.

If her male littermate is almost an exact replica of her it could be that others in her family are the same way. I’d get rid of the pair of em’ and fast. Been to the woods 50 times and can’t tree a coon! Why waste another night on them? It’s up to you but I’d be looking for a nice pup that’s not even remotely related to the one you have.

I will say one thing. You have the patients of a saint. Lots of hunting and still giving the young hound a chance. I myself would move on with another pup!! Good luck, Danny G.

I had the same problem i stated on my thread. (help training a 2yr old dog). Same exact problem but mine also had an aggression problem. Dident raise mine up from a pup. bought him as a malnourished 2 yr dog. supposed started dog(wasent).
Anyways i fed him and scalded him and that broke the aggression. Now the milling around; we used to take a finished dog with us, that dident work much with our dog. It did help in one good instance-- dogs treed and my dog kept trying to track. well when shot, he came running ready to fight. (because we shot a couple out just on him and a pup and it tore the dogs up.) from then on when he herd gun shots he was ready. So when he came to the shot; we grabed him and tied him up and let the other dogs get the coon. do that a couple of times. Then turn some cage coons go after you poor water on them and wait about 15 min. and let your dog go. Do that a couple times. Then take him on about 5 real hunts and see how he does. I think if they have the drive, they will pick it up. but it may take awhile sometimes. Depends if you got the time. If the dog has no drive and you have no time-----do the deed or give it to someone for a house dog.. Then you buy a good dog thats already doing its own thing!!! JMO

G L Weller, I would say your are correct. Funny thing is, if I told you how they were bred, you would just s*@# ! Out of some pretty solid lines that should have no problem throwing at least a decent hound.
Danny G, I tend to give dogs a little more chances than most. Times were pretty tough the last yr so I didnt have the cash to go get another pup. Got one that will be ready to hunt soon. When its time for that one, this one will be gone. I do enjoy seeing a pup go from nothing to a coondog. I like the challenges they present.
BBD 25, good solid advise. I appreciate it and that is the kind of info I want to hear. Thank You. But like the others said on here, she is on a down hill slide and picking up speed quick. If she dont turn it around VERY shortly, the fun will be over.

Jim I know the feeling! I tend do give along time at times to see something. Money comes hard here and I have to try everything. I have went thru several duds for off different crosses. Good lines just like you. Goes to show you they all wont make it! No matter the breeding.

Exactly Bryan. I was planning on waiting till spring to get a nice pup. But I am keeping my eyes open and would be willing to get one that is 5-9 months now, so I will have something goin good by fall. The old dog is getting up there. Dont have a lot of yrs left and I need a replacement! A GOOD ONE PREFERABLY!

You shouldnt ever have to beg a hound to tree, you know inside what to do and the longer it gets dragged out the harder it gets.

I'm not saying shes not a dud, but you stated she has tasted plenty of coons???? I quess I dont understand why a young hound weak on the tree is getting coon knocked out to her? I have ruined hounds in the past by doing that, they are smarter than you think, get coon knocked out and dont have to work for it, sounds like a good deal to the dog, get rewarded with no work involved. Maybe thats not the problem, but I'll guarantee one thing, if i have a hound not treeing, I'll be ****ed if he'll get any fur in his mouth.
