my dog just turn two! He has treed 2 times with older dogs. Just started taking him over the past month to month and a half. But we are training another 2 year old dog with him. We have let 3 cage coons go lately and The 1st time it went up a himlock pine and he track to it and tree'd for a second and then started tracking hard again (back tracking i guess). went to tree and saw one eye and never saw it again. Tried to get him to tree and he would for a second when you put him on it. But then jump down and track as hard as he could. Very Very driven dog. 2nd time he did the same thing except treed a second longer. Tried tying him up (he went crazy) and shooting it out to the other dog but when the coon fell it fell in a split and never came out. 3rd time he track it to the river and stayed at a squall till we got there which was awhile. Wouldent cross. To big i guess. I wasent crossing either! So tell me guys, how can i get him to stay and tree???
And does the astro dc 30 pick up good in cloudy weather? Mine was acting funny the other night and i think it was because it was cloudy!

Mine hasn't acted any different with cloud cover or no clouds.

I havnt had any problems with the garmin yet.. but the gps systems that are used in tractors will lose signal if it comes up a storm.. a little cloud cover never bothered them...

if this will help but we pour water on the coon before we let it go it seems to have more sent that way and when we let them go we'll wait 10 or 15 mins before we let the dog go they seem to do a better job i dont know if a track can be to hot and theyjust dont have as strong of scent going up the tree but the water seems to help for some reason give it a try see if it helps

had the same problem with my dog around that age. first dont get to eager with live trap coon that will sometimes ruin it. like i read sokem down with water. what i did was trapped a couple coon and let it tree right in front of her so she put two and two together which pretty much let her know where mr. coon goes when he's ran hard. also when i would tie her to the tree she would pay no attention to the tree but would want to back track it you gotta get the dog excited when it trees to know it did a good job really smack that tree up and show the dog it did an awsome job. other wise like ive heard shoot it and start over. dont, enough time if your willing to put in your time will teach you and the dog alot. gotta go back to step one and retrain it like a pup its a real pain in the @## is you know what i mean

what the water dose is ---when the coon goes up the tree the water will drips down on the dog treeing and the dog smells it real good and keeps on the wood ------don't make a slick tree dog out of him by too much --lol lol lol

Thanks alot guys, Ok we went last night and he ran good. got on a cold track and ran it a ways. We finally made it to him and he actually stayed at the tree. That was the first time thats happen with out a good proven dog. Which he rarely pays attention to any other dog. He's only tree'd with a proven dog once or twice! Hes pretty much a ill do it my self type dog for sure. he'll smell up the tree another dogs barking on and if he dont smell that coon really good, he wont bark the first time. he jumps back on the track and trys to figure it out. back to the tree, When we got there; he stayed, which was good but we never found the coon. had a small hole half way up a little bigger than two fist big. Figured maybe thats where it was.I did see where he scratch the bark off. But he did not hammer down at all. He kinda chop for a second, then bawl for a second. Not sure if he's figured his tree bark out yet. He's all bawl on the track. As for the gps, it did alot better. We loss signal quite a bit, but we always picked them back up. I guess because we hunt the Mountains and not the flat lands. He may be ok; just dont have the time to get him where he needs to be when i hunt him only one time per week and sometimes 2 weeks now! I may try the water trick next time we catch one.
