Got a mink killing my ducks and draggin them into a big rock pile. He'll clean me out if I don't get him. Anyone know of a way to get him?

Try to live trap him or put a pockett set in a whole in the rock pile with a small coni bait the back of hole or just get a hold of a local trapper im shure he could help ya out

bait him up with a dead chicken or duck, and snap trap him.

The way it sounds I dont think its a mink. Sounds like possum to me?

i was overrun by mink and weasels what i did was hang a dead chicken they killed over a 55 gallon barrel and put about ten gallons of used motor oil in the barrel they fell in the barell and drowned in the oil the reason i used oil it won;t freeze i got over 20 weasels and 5 mink that ended my chicken loss.

I had trapper I know set a couple traps, but haven't had any luck the last two nights. I am pretty sure it's a mink, they killed them by biting behind the neck and they were drug away. I've had this problem before and was able to shoot the mink underneath an old shed. We'll rebait the traps after the snow and keep trying, I think he'll be back, just hope I can get him first.

The barrel trick just might work, how do you set it up so they fall in? Can they jump that high?

find his hole or holes he is come in and out of and set a couple con-a-bear traps right on the holes wack and you got him!

yea connibears work good. my advise is use a 180 or 220 on him. u can catch him in a 110, but 180 is my preference. 330 is just way to big lol. connibears are also known as body grip traps for some of u all that dont know much on trappin... but i would say most everyone knows that much lol

A 110 or 120 is more than sufficent for catching mink. There was a study done with 110 conibears. They place them set in a mink cage. I don't remember the exact number of times, but most mink passed through the trap multiple times before actually getting caught.

The larger traps will likely result in more missed chances and also increase the likelyhood of a non target catch.

If you get a trapper there make sure he or she is good at trapping mink. Some guys can pile the mink up while many others just happen across a few here and there.



PS Almost forgot make sure you follow the laws, if it is not season, you may need a nuisuance permit.

I lived on a hunt club that shot about 25,000 birds a year. I lived there for seven years and managed the birds there when they needed someone to fill in. The club had both pheasants and ducks. I've delt withevery critter in WI. that can bother birds. It's not as straight forward as it might seem.

First, wire a couple of dead birds to the back of a live trap and set it very light. Block all of the enterence holes you can find with 110 body grip traps (use 180's and 220's and you could get yourself in trouble catching someone's pet...trust me!).

Secondly, dig out the exterior perimeter about 12" down and 24" out from the fence and install some wire fencing like you would install flashing on a roof.

Thirdly...if you are going to have these birds for a long time, get a terrier and raise it in with the birds from a very young age and train it to work on mice, rats, wessels, possum, mink and then coon and fox. You'll have to keep up with certain vaccinations on this dog more diligently than normal because of the dogs living in and around bird poop all of the time. I have a JRT that is trained to work large bird pens for varmints and also to rat around the feeders and roosts. It's a very usefull dog to have and really a lot of fun to work them up. You might have to get a few of them until you find one that has the rigth habbits to successfully live with the birds. Often times pups will pick the wrong place to bed and eventually get sick or they will not have enough attitude and get picked on by the birds until they just die. The right one will do all of the right things and have a happy life. There is always work to do and if you ever forget to feed them they just grab a little corn for a snack until you get there. It's hard to keep the birds from getting into the dogs feed but they usually learn to keep the birds off of their feed. Another type of dog that works well is a whipet. They are as fast as lightening but they do not handle the cold as well. The terriers are better at getting after stuff when it gets inside of the various structures that can be found in bird pens.

I've sat out many nights with a shotgun and a coon light waiting for mink and other critters.

If your house is close enough to the pen, figure out what time the mink likes to come and get out there about an hour and a half before they like to get there. Find something to sit up high on and don't move a mussle (like turkey hunting). When you hear the birds start raising cain, flip your light on and blast that sucker. Don't worry about shooting a bird or two or you'll never hit that thing. If you miss it's going to kill them later anyhow. No. 8 bird shot with as wide a choke as you can come up with will do the trick. If you can do it while the moon is still bright you wont need your light if your a decent shot.

Terriers are great ratters!! If you know anyone with a Jack Russel or Rat Terrier they would do the trick.

Also, you may not have just one mink - perhaps, a bunch. My daddy got weasels in the hen house once - they took a plank out of the floor and threw the terrier down - the ones he didn't kill, he threw out and the men clubbed em to death.

Hope you get em - wish you could mail a few alive to some PETA folks!!
