Pocohontos Plotts?

What is the deal with this line of Plotts? Are they big game hounds, coon hounds or both. Can anyone give me some info on them? Thanks, FullCry

Have not personally hunted with a lot of his hounds but I've heard from many, many hunters that they make top coon and big game hounds. They are also some of the best guys to do business with....

Pocahontus plotts are pretty universal, I have one female that can catch a cat, hog or coon on a regular basis.

plotts

i have a male off of gus and i promise this sucker is the hardest running, best track driving dog, i've ever hunted with. When he's hunted down he's real hard to beat. He's one of the only plott dogs i would have at my house, but he will always have a home with me. I love my english dogs but the pocahontas line is the line of plotts to get into. Nice dogs, nice people, and tons of grit mixed with more heart than 3 of my english dogs.

A friend of mine had two..both were braindead idiots. They would run the other way from a bayed hog, hang around your feet and usually be sitting back in the dogbox at the truck when we come out of the woods.

I think he culled one of them because it attacked his daughter.

ok

Well you find good and bad in all breeds and good and bad in all litters. I think the key to getting a higher percentage of keepers is by breeding only the best to the best.

I'm in no way referring to Mr. Walker with this because I have heard a lot of good comments about his dogs and a few bad and a lot of times it's the trainers fault. Too many jelous and young bucks out there training and breeding dogs that really don't know a good dog when they see one and will breed it because of it's bloodline and to sell pups to make a buck not thinking of the breed or looking deep within their self and admitting I need to find me an old timer that really knows hounds to help me. I don't mean this about every one that made a bad comment and I understand that some dogs just aren't going to make it.

The problem with all breeds of dogs today isn't the man that knows a good dog and has a good breeding program...but three quarters of the hunters you meet don't fully understand a hound and a quarter of them don't know anything what so ever to look for in a dog. As long as he trees something once an a while he is a good dog to them. The field trials are hurting the real hunting dog to and I hope I don't get kicked off the board for saying so.

Bottom line what category do we each fall into and what can we do about it?

In my opinion if you bought a dog from a reputable breeder and he doesn't work out don't dog the man out on the board due to the above reasons I stated because the next one may be like the folks pleased with theres. One could try another line and come out with worse but might get a good one. I'll shut up....FullCry

a buddy of mine had one and she was a great coon, bear, coyote, fisher, skunk, porky and what ever else she could find to run dog. but that was his fault not hers. when she was first started he run her on coon and she did great. but then he run her on bear, yotes, and fox and wrecked her.

I know and personally hunt with Eugene. have had plotts from him for about 16-17 years. They have suited me very well on coon, I have taken mine bear hunting also with him and they took to that also.
Yes there are duds in all crosses, I've had 3 out of last 2 litters(18 pups) and one of those that was supposed to be a dud but ended up doing well on coon for another guy.
I believe if you bought one that didn't suit you off Eugene personally he would probably work with you to get another one that did within reason.
I just sold an entire litter to a guy who guides for a living, later this year I'll find out how they turned out.

Brent
