When my son was in second grade (he's now 30!), I got called into the principal's office. His shool had one class of 'special ed' kids, and it turned out that two of the grade 6 kids had been physically and verbally harrasing one of the retarded kids in the schoolyard. My son stepped in and put a stop to it (physically), and I got called in. The principal explained that he had been fighting, and that he would be suspended, I asked Jason if that was correct, he said it was, and explained why. The principal said 'You should have notified the teacher on duty" Jason said "I did, twice, and she did nothing, so I did - what they were doing wasn't right" I turned to him there in the office and said "Son, I'm very proud of you, you did exactly the right thing, and I appreciate you standing up to kids bigger than you were to defend someone who couldn't defend themself". I turned to the principal (who sat there with his mouth open, and he started stammering about how fighting was against the rules...) and said "I certainly hope some action is taken against those two boys to prevent this kind of thing from happening again......"
He didn't have the nerve to do anything to my son at that point...
