Garmin GPS In A Nite Hunt Question

While reading through the UKC Rule Book yesterday evening, I noticed where UKC spoke about using the (Garmin) GPS dog locating device. My interpretation of this rule was that a handler can use this tracking system but the receiver unit must stay at the truck. If this is the correct interpretation, why is it that a handler with a beep beep collar can carry his unit on his belt with him to the woods?. It seems that if you call time out a ½ mile from the truck and the meeting spot is where you are currently standing the handler with the Garmin is at a dis-advantage because he has to go all the way back to the truck to retreive his unit and then retreive his hound within the hour. Is this the correct interpretation of this rule? I would think a handler could carry his Garmin Receiver as long as it stays in his holster until a timeout is called just like using a beep beep collar.

JiM or Todd---What’s your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Justin Tumbleson

I think you can carry it , it just has t be turned off and you have to notify the cast you have it and are going to caqrry it with you. Also if cast ask to see it you have to show it at anytime to prove it is in the off position.

The current rule for Astros is the same as the rule for any tracker, you can carry it but it must be off while the clock is running.

The way it is written in the advisor is written leading the reader to assume the astro is to be treated like a shocking unit. Meaning the dog can wear the collar but the hand held unit must be left at the truck. I do not have the advisor with me at the office or I would type it word for word as stated. It just confused me a little bit.

Thanks for setting me straight JiM.

When the Advisor addressed this it required the handler to inform the judge he had an Astro in possesion. I believe they dropped that requirement when it was put in the new rulebook.

Justin it boils down to the handler having two choices when it comes to using a Garmin GPS System during a UKC Licensed Event.

1) The handler may carry it with them but it cannot be turned on or in the on position other during time out situations. (just like any other traditional telemetry)

2) It may be left turned on or in the on position but must be left in the truck during the hunt. May not be used by any specatators while in the truck during hunting time. Obviously, during time outs the handler may get it out of the truck and use it to locate the dog.

Allen, I guess there must be good reasons for not allowing those at the truck to follow the action with the Astro, you can't trust people these days, but I stayed at the truck with my Atro following the hunt all last summer and it was great for someone too laidup to walk the walk. Won't be no more of that from now on and I will darn sure miss it.
