One of my favorite dogs was diagnosed with cancer (lymphoma). I had noticed a swelling in his neck lymph nodes and took him to the vet the next day. Lab test was positive for cancer. Vet said it was probably the earliest caught case she has seen. My dog's blood tested 100% normal so we have a chance of treating it successfully.

Curious what luck anyone else has had in treating cancer in dogs? Thanks.

I had a dog years ago that had a lump on her back that was cancer the vet removed the lump and she was cancer free for about two years then she got two lumps on her side that were both cancer those were removed and the vet put her on medication (can't remember what) for a while. She stayed cancer free after that and died at the ripe old age of 13.

No luck with treating cancer at an older age. We just let 'em live out their days and when the pain got too much for 'em we had 'em PTS.

Hope your dog can beat it.

I had one put down a few days before christmas with full blown lymphoma in all lymph nodes.

From my understanding life expectancy at that stage is about 2 months and that's about how long she lived at that stage.

She was an old hound and I let nature runs it's course on the old girl until I stepped in and called a vet out to put her down when the cancer finally took it's toll.

About 2 years prior, I had a tumor removed on one of her inside eyelids.

When the cancer started in the lymph nodes, it came like a tornado and spread quickly.

I have had No luck at all with my Rottweilers in the past. They tend to get bone cancer though and I think that type is more aggressive. Good Luck!! Just remember when and if it does get worse and not better do what is right for the dog. I have a realistic and honest vet, she was always for the humane thing to do and not lets try this or that $1000+ later and the dog is still in pain.

When my english pointer got lymphoma my vet said we could treat him with radiation and chemo but it's a lot of money and 140 miles round trip each week, and the dog wouldn't feel well then the vet said he believed more in quality of life than longevity so he put him on prednisone and we had 8 more months which included his last bird season.

My dog's treatment is as follows:

- vincristine (VCR) by IV injection once per week for 4 weeks followed by 2 more of these injections at 3 week intervals

- cyclophosphamide (CTX) oral medication once every 3 weeks for 12 weeks

- prednisone oral medication every other day for 12 weeks

My dog will be 7 in May. He got his second VCR injection on Wednesday and it did appear to make him weak for a couple days. I had him out for exercise today and he looked strong and energetic. So far so good.

My first police working dog lost his vision at 9 years of age. I took him to the vet and the vet wasn't sure what the cause was. I contacted a buddy of mine's sister that is a vet in New Mexico. She had just come back from a seminar on dog's vision/eyes. She informed me that a key indicator that something is wrong systemically with a dog is the eyes and vision. My partner was treated with prednisone and an antibiotic. He bounced back for about 2-3 weeks. His vision went on him again. I took him to the vet again and while I was waiting in the waiting area I was petting him and felt the lymph nodes in his neck swollen. I really didn't need to hear it from the vet because I knew at that point what it was. He diagnosed him with lymphatic sarcoma. I continued with the prednisone for about another month when he finally got down and I had to have him PTS.

Had a female boston terrier get it. We tried prednisone also. When I put a piece of chicken in front of her and she would'nt eat it, I knew it was time to PTS. Done it myself. Have to admit it tore me up. She was a great little dog...

I had some really good B&Ts that had cancer. In three generations all but one died from it. I ended up letting that line of dogs die out.

We had a female Plott that had a large mammary tumor on one of her back teats. We had it removed (before it had spread to her vital organs/lungs) and it was mostly non-cancerous. She lived a very good six months and a great coon season after that...It was a major surgery for her (at 10 years old) and a clot broke loose and went through her lungs, very hard to see & experience. BUT, we were SO glad that we had that last 6 months with her!

Not to hone in on Geminite, but, the lumps are the lymph nodes that are swollen. The lumps/nodes that I found were at the base of the neck. The vet found other nodes

We had a female Husky that was about 3 and was diagnosed with Lymphoma.

After a couple series of Chemo treatments and several thousands of dollars, we eventually had to put her down. She lived another year or so, but her quality of life for most of the time was very poor. We should have put her down much earlier. But it was the she-boss's dog and her money, so I didn't have much say.

Just yesterday I had to put my 5 year old down because of lymphoma. He wasn't eating and I thought it might have been an infection, so I gave him Amoxicillin for a few days and it didn't help. Then I noticed the swollen nodes under his jaw and decided I better take him to the vet. They also have these nodes on their back legs and those become swollen too. They looked at some cells under the scope and were sure it was lymphoma. Chemo was about $4,000 so that wasn't option and I figured the predisone would only prolong the suffering. He'd lost alot of weight and it was hard to put him down, but I think it would have been harder to watch him suffer.

The vet said this is not hereditary or contagious, is just happens.

My vet quoted $550 for the 12 week chemo treatment I outlined above. He's through the hard part and you'd not know he's ill by the way he acts. We caught it real early. It'll probably get him eventually but for now it is good to see progress.

Rick, we were close to $5,000. I'm not sure of the specific treatments. I'm sure she knows all about it, but it's not worth bringing up.

I wish you luck. I truly hope it works out for you, but I would never do it again.

I knew this day would come. Jack was diagnosed with very early stage lymphoma in February. We treated it from the get go and never let up. The vet said it never went into remission. Still, we turned a two month prognosis into about 10 good months. Jack lived normally and was happy up until about a week ago when his appetite started to dwindle.

I took him for a walk Saturday through his favorite hunting grounds. Sunday he acted weak and uninterested in anything. Today his breathing was labored and we decided it was time. 10 months to get ready and I thought I was ready. I guess we are never ready to lose some of them.

Jack was a little Beagle with a big heart and mind, and complete devotion to joyful living with his family.
