I got about a 3 mo. old pup, #1 pick male in the litter, deposit down, waiting to be picked up. Him and some littermates broke out of their pen this past Monday. They went down the driveway, and I suspect a neighbor's dog met up with them and attacked this male pup. He had some minor bite marks but the worse thing is he didn't have use of his hind legs.

We took him to the Vet. The Vet said in 72 hours he would regain use of his legs if he was going to and he loaded him up on medication to help the process. Well, 72 hours came and went with no improvement. The Vet says there is little to no chance he will regain use of his legs.

Anybody ever see a dog with this kind of injury recover? Its a new one on me. If he doesn't recover, I know the humane thing to do for him but I want to give him every chance.

Did the vet prescribe Prednisone? I have seen some pretty impressive results on back injuries early on. After 72 hrs things don't look to good.

Believe it or not I have seen a couple dogs the last couple of years that had issues with use of their back leg. We have two holiestic vets in the area. I have seen them use chiropractic on dogs and bring use of back legs, back.

Dont give up on him. You would be amazed how a dog can fight and recover from stuff like that. I had a little beagle pup when i was little,all of her brothers and sisters died of worms and she was about to join them i was only like five when this was going on and it was the summer time so my parents let me sleep outside with her and me and my black and tan slept with her for a couple of days. I had to feed her egg and milk solution bye pryin her mouth open and she fought thru it and ended up to be about the best dog a little boy could have me and her use to run possoms cats and anything else around the barn and farm so just dont give up on him cause if he does make it he will be one h heck of a dog im only 14 so i dont know much but hope this helps good luck with the little guy

I'm really sorry to hear this , it seem like there is always something fighting against the good things in life .

I think i would give the pup a week or so longer and see what happens , that is if he's not showing alot of pain ? It may just be he is bruised up real bad around his spine .
Being young like he is can make alot of difference in the healing .

i would give him a week or so.the pup may just have some swelling around his spinal colum puting pressure on his spinal cord.

My wife had a kitten that I accidentally stepped on as I was going out the door. It lost the use of it's hind legs and dragged itself around for 2-3 weeks. It suddenly started walking again, a little at a time, until it looked to be completely recovered. That was a few years ago and it's still just fine.

I would give it at least 2-3 weeks to make sure. Like someone here said, it may just be swelled around it's spinal cord and could go back down.

John if the pup is not in pain, I would just let it rest for a few more days. I have one who got hit, the vet told me to put him down. But after a couple of weeks he started to try to move and each day went on to get free movement again

Did the vet xray him? Could be that when he was bit it pinched something in his spine.......I'd give him some time and see what happens.....Sorry to hear that...It's always something happening setting us back....Good Luck...

YES IVE SEEN THEM RECOVER !!!! HE HAD A DAMAGED NERVE AND IT TOOK A LIL WHILE BUT FINALLY GOT BETTER !!! IF YOU WERNT SO FAR ID GIVE HIM A CHANCE , MY WIFE LIKES PLAYIN DR ON STUFF LIKE THIS . IT AGGRIVATIN FEEDIN AND WATERING THEM ALL THE TIME BUT DONT GIVE UP ON HIM YET AND AFTER HE GETS BETTER NAME HIM LUCKY !!

Thanks for the feedback. The Vet gave him all kinds of meds and did send some Prednisone home for me to give him. I'm going to give him all the time it should take, plus some before I give up.

On the good side, he's got control of his peein' and poopin'. I could even hold my hand under his lower belly and there was some resistance from his legs. He doesn't seem to be in pain and is eating good.

I would go over and have a talk with than the next the neighbor and time it decides to come over it wouldn't make it back there is no sense in that if I had a dog like that I would put it down myself

He's about a 120 lbs. and looks more like a wolf than a dog. There is a pretty good chance the neighbor saw it all go down.

....Sending some healing thoughts and prayers. Good news the pee and poo things are getting under control! As long as the pups not suffering and you're willing to keep trying go for it. As for the chiropractics... IF the pup is worth it to you to pay for this... I've seen some AMAZING stuff here on the horses when we did rehab. I was trained to do some of the manipulations and used them on my own greyhounds.
AS for the neighborhood dog... I hope the owner keeps that dog under control. If he looks more wolf than dog he could be a hybrid at that size. I have a friend who has had 2 and been VERY responsible with them...they CANNOT have contact with other dogs, people etc... so they are SAFE in his situation. HE would have killed his himself if it injured another animal... Your neighbor should be held accountable...
I'm real sorry you had this happen. Hope that the pup makes a full recovery! If so...you'll have a special hunting bud with all the extra attention I bet....

John D, give Sara Pallin a call... from what all the animal rights people are saying she has a pretty good plan.. seems she just has them fly over in helichooper and shoot them, then if they will bring in a hind quarter she will even give them $140 for doing it...

can't understand why they are all up in the air about it???

You know your Neighbor is probably liable for the whole vet bill and the cost of the dog if it comes to it. That is if you can prove that it was his/her dog that did this.

If no one saw the animal attack yours the next time he came over to my house would be his last. I'd swear that he was growling and going into attack mod at myself or one of my dogs.

Had a simalar problem here a few years back. Called the police and they informed me that in this county we have a leash law. And that if your dog gets off it's leash and does any DMG to anyone elses property you are finacialy resposible. Heck here you can shoot a dog over a chicken if the dogs looks like he is going to attack your livestock. And you have the right to protect your property.

Sorry about your pup, I would say the neighbor is deffinately liable so I'd get it checked out good. A dog like that running around it may be a kid the next time.

John - Having watched and learned what you put into your breeding program I know something like this hurts to the bone. Nurture that pup. You never know what you might have. I wouldn't give up too soon. Good luck.
