elvis method
i really like some of Wesley Sanford's training techniques. I bought a video called, "Tree my Dog." It's all about training puppies. He has a good idea about getting a pup's instincts turned on my using coon scent from the time they are 7 or 8 weeks old. They play with coon scent on toys and balls and then immediatley afterwards they get fed. he also puts wet puppy chow on trees with coon scent around the tree and on the bark. this gets the pup associating coon scent with something good like food. this also builds the pups confidence. I've learned that a cage coon can often do more harm than good if not done at the right time and stage of development.
Try just using a familiar toy of the pups with coon scent on it. get him treeing that toy and then gradually switch to a coon hide. dogs can find their toys with their noses so work on them finding a coon hide with their nose.
I used this method on my elvis pup and he could run and tree a drag 100 times by the time he was 6 months old.
but, all dogs are different.
thanks for posting. hope this helps. just don't get discouraged. If you like the dog that's all that matters. if he won't bark at a cage coon right now teach him to load, heal, fetch, sit, lay down; and when he does turn on to be a coon dog you'll have the best of both worlds. don't let anyone tell you when he or she should be starting. they are all different.
