i remember, when i was a kid, that there was this white and black fuzzy dog, named poochie.that dog would flat tree a coon. he was dead silent on a track but when he treed you could bet your bottom dollar he had a coon. he treed his first coon one afternoon(layup). they started taking him coonhunting, and he treed coon all the time. they even used him to train young dogs because he was not trashy at all. he treed squirrel during the day and would tree coon at night. i was wondering do any of you know of dogs that are not hounds treeing coon. if you do lets hear about them. thanks..... gary woods

Hey Garry, ya, I have heard of lots of curs being great dogs and even some terriers. Are you and Jody going tonight??? I figured he would get that female warmed up for tommorow night!!! :> ) Talk to ya later. Oh, by the way, there are also a lot of registered coonhounds that are not at all "HOUNDS" in my opinion too!!!! lol lol lol lol knuwhutimean?????????????????? lol lol lol

We have a small mutt at our place that will tree a squirl all day if you let him. He does a real good job with the pups.

He jacks the tree a little but never gets ruff with the pups.

I never have taking him out hunting. Just shoot a couple of squirls a year and he is happy.

Sheep no im not going tonight. i will be studying the word. we went last night .it was a short night axe, dixie, and tilly slammed a coon just after we turned them loose. i guess we got lucky... gary

Mt Curs are great to coon hunt with. If you like a dog that points too, there are some strains of coonhounds that probably have some bird dog in them. And, alot of German bred dogs like German Shorthairs, Weineramers, and Vizlas are bred to bay (tree) game as well as point. If I were to get a dog like that, I would want to import a German bred one. They are required to pass performance standards before they are allowed to be registered.

We bought mom a pomerainion poodle for a house pet that dad ended up falling in love with.This little dog would sneak out when we were coonhunting and come along.After a few hunts she caught on quickly.One night dad shot out a coon and the hound grabbed muffy thinking she was the coon as she would dive right in and try her best.Needless to say mom was very upset.Many nights dad would make one of us boys go up on the hill and get her as she would stay treed longer than most hounds.Wish these hounds were as smart.

I had a mixed female when I first started hunting. She was St. Bernard/ German Shephard. She was so mean only about five people could touch her. Those five could cut her heart out with a spoon, everybody else better watch out! I mean she was mean! I used to take her coonhunting when I first started hunting to let her out some. I never let her out around people.That dog learned after a few tree's. She would flat out tree. Long before we were hearing about 200 bpm tree dogs that mean female was blowing the top out of some southern oaks. I almost shot her several times. She would leave with the hounds, then sneak back and hide from me. Just when I wasn't ready, she would jump out of the bushes and scare the $&*@ out of me. I swear that dog laughed every time. But a treedog she was.

about 18 lbs wet that is the gamiest thing you will see.start my pups hitting a cage with him. will get rabbits up and run them with the beagles--when he falls behind he will pull out and lay on a fencerow to cut the rabbit off. he will tree anything i put up and we keep him in the house when hunting close by as he will go right to the hounds and tree like crazy----problem with that is he has to pinch anything around him when he gets to treeing. ha ha you should hear him and rock treeing together !!!!

I've got a Border Collie that will flat out tree squirrells. Silent strike and silent tree dog. He will stay put all day long though. He runs them up the tree and just lays there until my wife or I get home and release him from the tree. I'm going to take him squirrell hunting this year with me.

we've got a jack russell terrier who will tree coons anytime..........she is mean on the tree tho and that is her only problem...........

Norwegian Elkhounds, Airedale Terriers, Jagdterriers, and Mt Feists are some that I have had experience with. Nothing looks quite as good as a big male Airedale stretched long and tall on a tree. I would sure like to have some of the stock my dad used to have. I know that a little Airedale made its way into the English breed.
