Wondering what everbody else feels about a pup 8 months and up fighting coons has on their desire? I had a 7 month old catch a coon while running with the pups dame. Anyway, other than a small bite on the lip, the pup killed the coon and seems to love to hunt possibly even more. The coon had treed about 4ft up on a broken off tree and one of the dogs pulled him down. Dogs are something, I have a rabbit dog thats scared of rabbits if it sees them, but runs a track exellent. Others I have, if they get to the rabbit, the'll have it 4 lunch in about 10 seconds. Just interested to hear if others have seen desire pick up after a dog fighting a coon. By the way, he runs track and has started treeing with his dame. He's about 60 pounds already, so the coon went out quick.

Ive seen pups react like yours and ive seen some be scared to death of a coon for a long time after.

If I can help it, my dog never chews on a coon unless its graveyard dead from puppy till it dies of old age. Sometimes it just cant be prevented.
Just my personal prefferance not to get my dogs bit when I can prevent it.

I let my pups decide when they want to get in on the fur in the mouth part of the hunt. All my dogs get it done on coon and yote. I will not hunt or keep a wimp of a dog as I would call them. It all depends on what a person wants from their dog and how they are trained. Had a B&T one time that would just walk away from a coon that came out of the tree dead. I like my dogs gritty but only to the game they run. JMO

i think it depends on the dog.

i let mine fight a coon now and then i think it helps them.

as long as the pup/young dog dont get whipped I think it makes em hate a coon alot more, and thats a good thing.. IMO

each pup is different, obviously yours likes to fight a coon and you should prob keep feeding them to him. But the next pup you get may never like to fight a coon. So treat each pup as an individual , just like you do your kids.

I posted the question to see what peoples opinions were. I was talking about a pup catching a coon on the ground which you have no control over. I was talking about while they are out away from you. Thanks and good hunting.

depends on how big the coon is.they grow them pretty
big in the corn belt but those pine cone coon in s.c are
not very big.bullett killed his first coon at 6mth had
another sal jump last night trying to protect her kittens
he was right on her when she climbed 25ft away.

You have no control when a dog catches a coon on the ground. You can control what happens when they are treed.

Some pups handle fighting a coon well and some even love it, but I've also seen pups get ruined.

My preference is to lease a pup and then lead it up to the dead coon, then let the pup do what ever it wants to.

if a dogs to young it will make it or break it but you don't want to start 'em to early because you don't want to start them off to early because it will make them shy of a coon at first but as they get older let em hammer down and then eventually it won't matter how hard the fight is they'll git r dun

i do not think its a good idea to let pups fight coon... i dont think its a good idea to let any dog fight a lively coon, but if that big not so happy coon gets ahold of a pup he could really get tore up BAD, and possibly ruin him. you cant control if they catch it on the ground, but if at all possible ill shoot the coon out dead to the dogs while treed

If i knock a coon out to a pup i try to get a good head shot and drop it out dead.I always try to hunt a pup with an older dog that will take care of the pup if the coon does fall out with some life left.Ive seen pups set back a ways from getting chewed on too early.

I have yet to have a pup go backwards because it got it's arsh whooped by a coon. I have seen several that got very fired up the first time they got bloodied. I let mine fight the coon.
