how many of you have hunted with a dog that would either
1. hit the timber and then just work the edges all the way around it.
2. goes right through the timber and hunts the back half without even putting his nose down in the first.

is this genetics or a training error?
also can it be fixed.
i herd some comp hunter who look for a hound like this but i know it bugs the heck out of me. i want a dog to hunt from the get go. if a decent track is 20 yards from me hit that track and tree it.

would like to hear your opinions!!

lol actually last night it was a bluetick. but i have seen in all breeds..lol especially them dang english!!

I think it's just their style...every dog is different. I personally like a dog to circle, I dont like when a dog has to straightline a ways before starting to hunt. I'd prefer a dog to circle, and either get a track or come back to me so we can go try another spot. With that said, they'd better be hunting during the circle, and they should have sense to check out likely areas like a brook, blueberry patch etc and be looking for a coon.

In my limited experience a pup usually starts out hunting fairly close doing a decent job of hunting an area out.

As they get more experience the figure out what "works" for them and they tend to keep doing that.

You can alter this but it takes work.
