Corey,

my only recommendation is that you get one that's light enough to put in the truck by yourself.

That probably means going with a pricey aluminum one, but I think it's worth it. But if you're the type that will leave it in the truck for months at a time, it may not matter as much. But mine is in and out several times each week and it gets to be a pain.

Myself, I prefer one that is lined with wood on the inside. I know they are heavier but in my opinion they are insulated better and if you get one that isn't diamond plated then you can just wash it and it is clean. I don't like the diamond plated ones because they oxidize and then you have to polish them to get them to look clean again. Everyone has their own opinion. It is just what you think you might prefer

for just a few dollars you can make a stand with rollers. measure it to math your truck bed and roll it on and off. i made one out of 4x4 and 2x 4 in about a 1/2 hour

dog box

i think the wood inside is the best for the dog. seems to be better in heat and cold. aluminum is very cold in winter. if i got a alum. one so it was easy for ME, i would definately have
it insulated on the inside. i try to think of the dogs well being if you are hauling them around. i have a hound caddy and it is heavy, but nice for the dogs.

You'd be surprised how warm the aluminum ones are. They're lined with thick plastic so the dog doesn't touch the aluminum...just the plastic. Dont forget dog's have a thick fur coat too. I fill mine with straw in the winter, shavings in the summer so that keeps them plenty warm in the winter. I tell ya, I'd go all aluminum. The ones with wood will rotm out eventually. My old box is made by continental (no Unique), and I've had it for well over 10 years. All aluminum so rot isn't an issue..infact I bleach and hose it out a few times a year! I did a pole on here also, everyone seems to love their Owens boxes. When I eventually buy a bigger box, I'm going with an Owens.

I have a Diamond Deluxe I don't care for it at all, I had some welding issues with it from the start which I let the company know about and in my opinion all they did is try and blow smoke my way. I really like the Owens boxes.

Right now I have a Regal dog box and like it really well. I have had 2 Houndsmen Deluxe dog boxes, 1 Owens, 1 Diamond Deluxe and now this Regal.

My next box will be either a Regal or Houndsmen Deluxe... actually probably a Houndsmen Deluxe because I can get my hands on them easier than a Regal.

My $0.02

I bought a UNIQUE,

without the top storage compartment, about 2 years ago. To make it what I call useable, it needed some work done on it.

First, after every rain, I was cleaning water out of it, because it was not caulked, & water would run in around the windows & doors. In the winter, there were times that the ice would be a half inch thick, & had to chip that out after a rain. I took it to a Heating & Air place & had them put some nice AWNINGS on. They stick out about 2 in. & also they continue down the sides about 4-5 in. Caulked around the Awnings & this pretty well took care of the water problem.

Second, one of the side windows didn't have the foam backing tape on it, & it rattled like crazy, & I had to fix that.

Third, I found that in the hot summer or cold winter that heat or cold would transfer up through the bottom of the box, because it sit flat on the bed of the truck. I took 2 treated 2 by 4's, to make runners & fastened them to the bottom of the box, running long ways. I also put the runners right under the middle of each compartment, so when the weight of the dogs got on it, it would not bow down, & break over time.

I would call it useable, NOW & it even looks better with the Awnings on it.

To keep from

putting runners on the bottom of your box and making it heavier. Try a piece of 4 inch thick foam underneath the box. I will not bounce with the dogs in it. It takes the transfer of heat or cold through the bottom of the box out of the equation, it also holds the box in place.

The plastic on the bottom of the dog box compartments insulates the dog from whatever the bed bottom would be. Keep in mind, the bed isn't hotter or colder than the box itself. A nice bed of shavings or straw keeps them well protected, summer or winter.

We have 3 boxes, Mullins - Diamond Deluxe - Regal

The Mullins is the primary box because it has top storage. That thing is Heavy. Definitely not one you want to be taking in and out.

The Diamond Deluxe, I like this box. Light and the dogs stay nice in it. Has locks on the doors also. No top storage, otherwise this would be our primary box. I can even load this one on my own.

The Regal, I can't really comment on. We haven't used it all but one time I think. It's built great, but again no top storage, and it's on the heavy side. Once I get a truck of my own, this will probably be the box I use.
