I got started jumping in with buddies on their lion hunts back in the late eighties. My interest came as a outdoor writer when the California voters stopped a lion hunting season by vote after the season had been closed for around twenty years.
By the mid-ninties, a local lion hunting guide approached me wanting me to go hunting with him and write about if for Bowhunter Magazine, so I did. We ran down a nice Pope & Young tom lion and killed it then the story followed. That spring he gave my son a little red pup and the rest is history, as I now feed eight hounds and run bears and lions year round.
I will say that having a successful lion hunting guide and houndsman take me under his wings and share his expertise and knowledge probably short-cutted my learning curve in many ways. He was always there for advice and had me guiding his clients in only a few short years.....
A really good lion and bear hound is pretty hard to make, and requires lots of knowledge, time and money. Making a pack of big game hounds will test a person's resolve in many ways, as it takes a sturdy set of legs, the ability to learn, the love to walk, and tons hours and dollars out of the family budget.
But the journey into making a successful pack of big game hounds from scratch is well worth it if you have a supportive wife. Good luck and keep'em treed,
ike
