We use Feeder Pig injectable ivomec. (but give oral to dogs) It's the same stuff as the cattle variety but the cattle type is stronger and must be mixed with something such as the post above states due to it being more 'condensed'. Piglet is easier to administer.
I give 1/2 cc to my little dogs (jrts and small beagle mix) and 1 cc to my adult coonhounds. I give it the 3rd of every month except during the dead of winter and now and again, I switch things up with Panacur, just not during mosquito season as the ivomec also protects against heartworm. It protects against fleas, ticks as well in addition to the worms. It does not get certain types of worms or giardia so you need to switch off now and then for complete protection. I also have fecals run a couple times a year just to see where we sit on such things.
As for dosage, etc. I give what my vet has instructed me. He gives it to his dogs as well. Though he only disclosed this over dinner with my Dad one evening because he could get in trouble for officially recommending something for off-label usage like that. But... it does not mean that you can't tell your vet your intentions and get his/her reaction. They may be able to give you more advice that way.
I've heard of people mixing it with molasses. I don't bother. I give it (orally!) and then give them a dog biscuit to get the taste out of their mouths. Believe it or not, I have a couple who seem to like it. Blech!
Tip: It can be hard to pull that stuff from the bottle into your syringe. Push a syringe full of air into it first releases it somewhat so it doesn't take so long to pull out.
DO NOT GIVE IVOMEC TO ANY COLLIE BREEDS!!!! That includes border collies and shelties. And do NOT give to cats, either.
Would love to know if anyone has any tips for worming cats cheaply, though. I just got blessed with a new litter of kittens from a rescue cat and I'm clueless. They are 5 wks old and need worming. Advice?
Janet
