Morning Turkey Hunt

A good friend of mine is a die hard turkey hunter. He lives about 2 hours away from me and he was telling me that he has had a terrible year Turkey hunting. He said all the turkeys up by him weren't responding to calls and things were just bad. Well, I explained to him how I had some of the best Turkey hunting around and told him all he needed to do was show up and I could get him a good gobbler "no problem" .

The funny thing here is that I haven't been turkey hunting for 15 years and had no idea if we would even see a turkey on any of my spots. I never thought he would believe me, let alone show up for a hunt. Well, he showed up last night so we could hunt this morning. Oh Man! I still played it off as I knew what I was doing and bragged about all the turkeys I had been seeing (along the road on my way to work on places I don't have permission to hunt). I figured I woudl just take him to a couple of my deer hunting and rabbit hunting places. If we didn't get anything or even hear anything it couldn't be any worse than what he had done all year.

Well, we got up WAY TO EARLY this morning and went out. The first spot we heard one gobble a couple times and then nothing. I told him that I was saving the good spot for second (yeah right). He was believing the whole thing. We went to the next spot and there were three turkeys way out in the back of a field. It took us about 5 minutes to put the turkey hunter sneak on them just to find out they were all hens. While we were messing with them we heard a gobble off to the east. I told him that is where "I knew" the turkeys would be.

We went off in the direction of the gobble and before we knew it, we were close. There were definitely two toms working toward us. We sat down and pretended to be a bush for about 5 minutes and called a few times. I looked to my right and here they came, two BIG toms. Man those things are ugly! Dan moved a little to get into position for the shot and then BANG! Down went one of the turkeys. I couldn't believe it. We walked up to it and flipped it over to check the size of its beard and it had two. One was really thick and 11 1/2 inches long (yes Dan had a tape measure) and the other was 7 inches long. It had 1 3/8 inch spurs too. Nice turkey........I guess.

So, now my friend thinks I am the worlds greatest turkey guide. Two hours of hunting with me and he shot the biggest turkey of his life. Sure am glad that is over and he didn't find out I was full of BS.
