Last Thursday night after a pleasure hunt (we treed two) my friend's 3 year old Walker male, Rock, had a seizure as we walked through a field back to the trucks. It didn't last very long but it was really weird. He is a very healthy dog and he just started swaggering around, then started seizuring. We held him until it was over and he started druling profusely. After about 5 minutes or so he seemed fine. He took him to the vet on Friday, but didn't really get any answers. Some possible causes they said were a reaction to the flea/tick medication he put on him earlier in the day or epilepsy. I have not had any experiences with either except that my aunt's Golden Retriever is Epileptic and that breed is prone to it. I didn't think it was very common in coonhounds, and the dog didn't have a prior history of having seizures. The dog is fine now but we are all trying to figure out what happened and what we can do to prevent it from happening again. Any thoughts?

Had a beagle that started having them at about that age, had to put him on phenabarbatol.

Does he have him on a good dog food. If he has him on a cheap food his blood sugar could be to low. A buddy got a dog from a guy it did the same thing the guy was feeding a cheap dog food. Got him on a good dog food has never done anymore. The vet said a cheap dog food could make his sugar drop an have a seizure.

Try giving him a Honey Bun (for the sugar) just before hunting him again. Otherwise, lifelong phenobarb or an alternate med will probably be necessary. I've trained Great Danes & Golden Retrieivers who were on meds for a lifetime because of seizures. As long as they had their meds they had no problems.

Danielle....
I have a friend whose redbone has seizures. The vet told him
that the red dog had lyme disease. I don't know if I buy that or
not but that came from a vet so take it for what's it's worth.

I know what you meant lol.....Anyways, nope, we haven't had too many problems with ear mites....Our 2 y/o male had some problems with an infection awhile back, but thats the only ear related problem that comes to mind. We got it cleared up pretty quick for the most part, but I think it will irritate him the rest of his life. Vet said it was just the way the cartilage in his ear was shaped that trapped in moisture and the best we could do to help was to keep it clean and dry.....

Buckshot, we also pondered surgery, we decided not to. Our vet said it is a very painful surgery and shouldn't do it unless his ears got really bad. So far, he has been okay as long as he dosn't swim a lot and things like that. He's usually okay in the rain or really wet/dewey nights, sometimes putting cottonballs in his ears helps keep out water.

We have found that it helps to wet a cottonball with Colloidal Silver and rub his inner ear with it, then leave it open for a few seconds to air dry. Seems to soothe them and keeps them healthier. We also got a drying solution to squirt in and clean out with from the vet that helps when he has a flare up.

Does your female shake her head when her ears get irritated/or hurt? Ours does and it ends up making the ends of them split open and bleed. It's a real pain for both me and the dog when this happens and was hoping you or someone else may know of a way to prevent it.....

10-4 I had to put my friend down a year ago . He just would walk around shaking his head I couldnt keep it clean much more than two days .It got to a green stage and the vet said what I did not want to hear .But he is better off .

She shakes them when they get wet but she scratches at them really bad mostly.

I have thought about trying to make a latex mold that can be safely inserted that does not go down the canal (not like it really can go down as there is cartilage in the way) and then put a swim sock over her ears.

We have a Yadkin River dog that had a seizure about 1 year ago. He got up from it and was fine. About 4 months ago, he had another one. He was fine after this one also. His seem to happen when he becomes overheated. This started when he was 3 also. When a person seizes, you should not hold him/her down but just make sure that everything is out of the way. This was changed from holding them down a few years ago. Not trying to correct or anything, just a nurse with a little info!!! If you find out what causes the seizures, let me know!!
