Lawn Mower Experts **LOOK**

I'm looking to buy a lawn mower. I need something with a 48 inch-54 inch cut. Also 18-23 HP motor. We've used my in-laws JD for few years, and we're looking for our own now. We really like the JD's but can't really afford a new one. We're looking into used ones too. We're not wanting to spend over $2500 most likely unless we find a good deal. Are there any recommendations that you might have? Any mowers that we should stay away from??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a cub cadet zero turn 50" cut and I think 22 horse motor last year for $2,350.00

very good mower, have not had any problems with it at all, will cut the same ground in a 1/3 of the time our old lawn tractor did.

I've heard varying opinions on the Cub Cadet, but they seem like they'd be worth a look. Thanks for the response!

IMO Cub is not what they used to be since being bought by MTD (same folks that make Murray). Also beware that the JDs you see at Lowes and Home Depot are not the same as the ones at the dealership. The ones at the dealership cost more, but are much better built.

Scag

My dad has had a grass cutting business all my life. We have used a lot of different types of mowers. If your property is good and flat buy a Scag Freedom Z. If it is hilly get a JD from the dealership. Depending on how much yard you have. If you have a 1 1/2 acre or more I would suggest either one of these. If all you are cutting is 1/2 to 1 acre just buy you a Lowes JD or a Murray, or Craftsmen. What ever you do make sure the motor is a Kohler or Kawasaki. My Scag has a 19hp Kawasaki that will cut circles around the new 28 hp Briggs series. They will last longer also. Do not buy a zero turn and expect a great cut on unlevel or hilly property, it is actually very dangerous to use on uneven land.

0 turn mower is great-they are fast- sorta fun -- like a bumper car -lol

- unless you have steep ground-

not too bad going up hill -

i mow any steep places

drive up --back down -

they can be outa control down hill--

you are driveing and steering with back wheels-- no weight on them going downhill --
front wheels just for balance - they just swivel -- any which way --

machine can turn and run downhill on any sidehill-

-- -i cant really advise you on brand -- only one ive used is a toro - no mechanical problems -- lol

I bought a Cub Cadet 1554 last year to use at the store. 27 horse with 54 in cut. They retail for about 3000.00 at a dealer. My best friends brother works at the Cub Cadet factory in Brownsville TN and used his employee discount which brought the grand total to 1500.00 that I paid and I kicked in a franklin for him. Great machine I cut about 2 acres with it.

been thinking of getting a husky lawn mower myself. I fenced off all but a small yard YEARS ago, but thought I might be all uptown and mow the road right of way................then agian we have roads on all 4 sides of the property.........maybe I'll just throw up a hotwire.

I have been running Exmarks z's for years now. Of course $10K is out of your price range.

If you have a small yard, then any decent rider will do. anything bigger than that and I would look at a used commercial.

Geez, no brainer. Get a commercial walk behind. Just as fast a zero turn rider. Not going to kill anyone to walk a little and you can get a good one for next to nothing. I bought a 48" Bobcat walk behind that was retired off a commercial lawn crew about 7 years ago. Paid $300. Has a 14 hp Kawasaki motor. Haven't put a dime into that mower except for a couple belts. Got it out last night to get her ready for the season. New plug, new gas filter, fresh gas and one pull later she was purring like a kitten!

As far as self propelled small lawn mowers I have a cub cadet with an industiral engine, one point adjusting deck. Nice but heavey. Variable speeds. This mower was around $700 new. Im selling it because to heavey to turn around with. My wifes likes to mow and she says sell. Looking at Snapper or Huskvuarna (SP!). I had a guy tell me theres only around 3 different manufactures now they just build to there specs.
I use a JD for my Grandads place. He has around 3 acreas though. Like it alot.

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. Some were pretty clever too. I'm still not sure what'll I'll end up with. I've been shopping around for about 2 weeks now. A commerical walk-behind probably would be about what I need....and like Todd said, walking won't hurt me! Thanks again for everyone's input.

Just last year I bought a Cub Cadet LT1050, 23 hp with a 53" mowing deck. It's not a zero turn but almost. I paid $2000 and it's worth every penny. What I like about it is, quiet, fast, 3 blades, quick wash deck (just snap a hose onto 2 spigots to clean out underneath each time ya mow), hydrostatic drive (no gears, rock the the pedal forward or backward). Grease points are easy to access, same with the belt, air cleaner, etc. Turned my hours and hours of mowing into a 30 minute job! I love my Cub!! Even has a beer holder!!!
