To Close For Comfort

Hey hillbilly here again with some question's about pup training? Was out with my walkers early last night and it started pouring down the rain and we had already been out probeley two hours,So I decided to call it quits. We were on are way out and I saw a deer out in front of us about eighty to a hundred yards so I paused for a moment and watched it bounce off. Well I took the pup's down there to the track and my male dogs hair raised up on his back and he through that nose up in the air and he went out there a ways female right behind him,I heard her yelp a little so I called them back when they came back I scolded them both a little bit. Now did I do right or not ? Remember now Im new at training these pup's but I don't want them running trash as you coon hunters call it. Not trying to be a smart a** or anything just dont remember hearing that when I was a kid hunting with granddad. The word "TRASH". I haven't got any shock collers yet, can't afford them right now. Are they'er any other ways to break-um off trash, other then shock collers and scolding them? Also was out this afternoon did'nt have the pup's with me but just trying to get some exercise for my back, was about two hundred yards behind house and stumbeld right up on a two-hundred pound black bear I stepped behind a big tree and held real tight and this bear came right towards me and got within ten yards of me he finally winded me and turned the other way moving slowley. I figured he would of bolted off, but didn't.So Im glad my pup's wasn't with me today, Well I dont know. My question here I guess is what or how would you break them off bear the same as other things ? Or should I let them run some of this trash, had one man tell me that I Should RIGHT -OR WRONG?

Scott right now i think if they run trash we should scold them cause if we let them just think of what there gonna do when we take them out at a older age.......

Scott,
I Believe that you shouldn't have called them back AND scolded them. You called them, and they came back to you. Therfore you scolded them for doing what they were told.
It seems that you have a really good handle on these pups, so what I would do (since you don't have a shocker), is when you think they are running junk, call them back to you and don't scold them. Just put them back in the truck and go to the next drop. They will get the idea that junk races are not what they are supposed to do.
Now this is just the way that "I" would do it. I'm not saying that is the best way. Some folks out there may not agree with it, but it has worked for me in the past.

if they get to treeing all kinds of bear you send them to me and ill replace them.... we call it trash ... thats anything we dont intend to hunt . bear is trash when your coonhunting... coon is trash if your bear hunting... to some deer is only trash they worry about. if my pups showed any interest in deer i would haul them over to fresh deer track and switch them . call them . pet them for coming to you.. put a leash on them. haul them over to deer track and switch them good... this is if i dont have a shock collar... when breaking dogs off trash scolding is not exactly the term id use.. i think you did pretty good.. it doesnt sound like they ran trash .. but next time they might.. if theyre old enough to hunt theyre old enough to scold them severely. maybe even spank them a little.. when you see a deer jump up and they show interest.. thats what i call a training opportunity... ...make sure they can smell it... a dog does not see as well as you and will show interest in a running deer it sees and doesnt smell... a little prevention now will save them some real pain later... its easier to train them before they get good at running trash.. it does not reflect badly on you or your dogs if they do start to run some trash.. this is real normal.. but if you dont stop it quick it can get out of hand fast. pete
