A friend of mine did a nice job tanning a hide for me this year. It is cured and clean. It does however remain stiff and wanted some ideas, hopefully shortcuts to make it more pliable.

WE USE COLEMAN LANTERN FUEL ON OURS. IT SEEMS TO MAKE IT REALLY SOFT, IT DOSENT STINK BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AND IT MAKES THEM VERY NICE.

I use regular tanning oil. Place a dull axe head in a vice. Turn the hide inside out and work it over the dull axe edge. Doesn't take long and it will be soft when you are done with it. Elbow grease is the secret.

soak it in dish soap (Dawn) for about 4 hrs and hang it up and let it almost dry, when it almost dry turn it inside out (leather out) and break it over the edge of a table, or like said before,a dull axe head for about 30 minutes and then hang to competley dry. I own and operate Mint City Tanning, a tannery here in Michigan. I tan coon for $35.00 retail and $50.00 wholsale. Four or more hides must be sent to recieve wholsale prices. oil it up on the leather side and Throw it in the wifes dryer with an old shoe or 2 and the heat turned off. Works nice.

If you had a Indian Squaw Around She Would Chew it to Soften it !!!

The "Bucks" would Pee on the Hides to Tan Them.. This was the First Acid Tanning ..

And they started Smoking the Near Finished Hides with Ceder or Sage prob. cuz the Taned Hides Smelled so Bad !!!
