Coon Season Starts Here Today

It’s March 1st and in the mid 50’s today here in central North Dakota, the warmest day yet this year! After spending a few weeks waiting out the cold, for me this first warm day marks the beginning of our coon hunting season which runs year round. We have some great hunting up here with ample wooded river bottoms, farmland, a gazillion acres of wetlands and lakes, some wooded hill country, lots of public land, cool summer nights and just about no competition for places to run your hounds. You don't have to worry about your hound ending up in someone's back yard. There’s also a coon club that holds licensed hunts with some friendly members and exceptional hounds.

With a good looking prospect of my own to work on, 2008 is going to be a great year! Happy hunting and stop by for a visit or hunt if you are passing through. I'm located just off I-94.

I'm hoping to look you up this summer at a nite hunt. Jay B. says there are some great coon hunters in MN. Thanks for the compliment on the pup.

Thanks. He's doing a good job hunting too. He'll be a year old in April.

What part of N.D. do you hunt? I hunted at Douglas, Wyoming many years ago and sure enjoyed that. Huge coons.

Jim, in the winter I hunt the cottonwood bottoms along the Missouri River in south central part of the state. Come summer, I go straight north to the wooded hills and lake country on the Manitoba border. Got a cabin up there. Some of those Manitoba coons are almost black and big enough to whoop most any dog.

I've also hunted our wooded breaks in the badlands of the western part of the state. Sometimes i go out there in the winter because the snow melts first in the west. Seems coon are just about everywhere if you are persistent in looking for them.

I've also hunted some exceptional oak river bottoms and farmland in the southeastern part of the state. That country is probably similar to what most folks hunt anywhere in the midwest.

Not many coonhunters in the state. Seems everyone wants to shoot pheasants, waterfowl or bucks. Oh well, leaves more coon for the few of us and our friends that do run them.

rick,
good looking hound.... mentioned to you before have hunted in n.d. many-many yrs. ago... near hazen, bealuh along knife river, shelter belts, were quite a few coon.. also around garrison... still have family in bismarck and jamestown... have not been out that way for many years.. always enjoyed visting the peace garden state, lot of good people, well guess not a lot, but good ones... used to work for a guy that rented boats-sold bait etc. below the dam at garrison, was about 14 yrs. old at the time... if ever get back out that way will try to get in touch... continued success with your dogs... did you say coons are always in season???

Yes, coon season is always open here. This is a big waterfowl and pheasant state and the G&F department wants them gone. I only kill a few each year and tell my bird dog buddies that I kill them for their cause to raise more birds. Glad to hear from you again. I hunt the tailrace below the dam a couple times a year. Can be good some nights.

Travis, he's just a pretty face and I'm sure you could find a better pup elsewhere. Besides, last night he developed a new bad habit of slobbering all over the tree. Never had a dog do that before and I knew it was only a matter of time before his faults would start to appear. I'm thinking maybe it's because of all the c**p hanging around is neck! He was probably loosing his breath. Happy hunting, Travis!
