Aluminum Dog Box Reviews

Hi All, I've been thinking about upgrading to a bigger dog box. I've been using the same Continental dog box for the past 10 to 12 years and it's served me VERY well. I just need something a little bigger to haul more than 2 dogs. I'd like one with no wood in it's construction. So far I've been looking at Diamond Deluxe, Owens, and I heard Unique are the old Continental Boxes. I plan to order it with a strike cage on top for rigging. Feel free to post your comments good or bad about the 3 brands I've mentioned, and also list other brands I dont know of. I'm seeing alot of truck tool boxes in black and I kinda like that, since aluminum does get pretty grundgy look when it's all oxidized and such. Does anyone make a black aluminum box, or maybe a clear coated diamond plate? Lets hear it, your experiences are appreciated.

I have a Continental also. I've been using mine about 10 years as well. The only problem I've ever had with mine was the insulation in the top fell down once and I had to glue it back in place. A minor thing. That was several years ago. You are correct...it is now Unique. Mine is the DB4848 top storage which is about 48" wide and 48" deep. I can haul four dogs in it and it fills my needs so I will not be upgrading. As could be expected the alum has tarnised a bit but it is not a concern of mine. The key locks on the top and doors still work well.

Mike I got a Owens all season with double storage. It has door on both sides of the box. You can remove the fronts, sides, and places in the doors. It is insulated and has removed pads. It is Diamond plate. Nice box I keep it to travel in. I stilll have my old wooden box with top storage. I us it for hunting. Hounds have to earn the right to get in the travel box.lol It holds 4 dogs easy.

I bought a Diamond Deluxe this past spring, I was very disappointed when I got it. It's built CHEAP !! The walls are paper thin and the way the doors latch is a joke. Personally I would build my own again, I would not buy another one. I did have a Continental box years back and it was built 10 times better than a Diamond Deluxe.

There's an acid you can get to clean aluminum, all the cattle jockeys use it on their trailers once a year and they look brand new.

Don thats a nice box! I want to rig off the top otherwise that would be the one! So Owen's are pretty rugged and all? They look like real good ones.

Nutman, you're the second person to say that about Diamond Deluxe. I'm gonna scratch them off the list. It's down to Owens or Unique. The reason I'm considering Unique is like I said, my Continental has been a great box..I've just needed to go bigger for a while now. Does Unique have a website? I'll be e-mailing Owens to see if they can put a cage on top for me, if so I'll probably be going with the #55006 with a strike cage. I'll have to see what Unique has, and if they're built as well as my ole Continental box. And of course, price is always a factor.

Can anyone tell me more about that acid wash? I wonder if it's safe for dog boxes?

mjflores,

I bought a custom dog trailer from Crow River Manufacturing last winter. I'm very happy with the quality of materials and construction. They also make boxes. Good luck making a choice that meets your needs.

The acid wash you are talking about is called Aluma-Bright.No it is not safe because it strips off the finish.Instead use Mothers Aluminum Polish.

as far as unique. i bought one this last spring and i was pretty disappointed. i thought the insulation could have been thicker and the top storage was made poorly with not enough support in the middle of the lid making it bow after a couple weeks of use. also the latches aren’t the best.. but the first ice storm we had i hit a patch of ice and my truck went spinning which in turn threw out the box and it did hold up decent considering it went skidding down the road at 50 miles an hour(no dogs in it by the way).
here are some pics of it.

every corner was cresed like this.

i really like Owens and that is the box im buying next for sure!!
i buddy of mine has a continental and it was made alot better then these I think!!

I bought a UNIQUE,

a little over a year ago, & after each rain I have to get the water out of it. There was no caulk around the window frames, so I caulked those good, that done a little bit of good, but didn't stop the water from getting inside. After the rain that just now came through, this will be the 2nd time this week that I'll have to take the hay bedding out & dry it out inside. Last winter, I had to CHIP the ice out of it several times. I'm thinking about calling a friend of mine in Oklahoma that used to coon hunt & is a cabinet maker by trade, to make another one, like he made for me back in 1980. It was made out of plywood, & it lasted me until last year, when I got this LEAKY SUCKER.

boxes

i looked at them all while at the autumn oaks. owens was by far the best crafted box there. no sharp edges, and the extra attention to detail is weel worth the small difference in the price. mine is the bottom storage drawer type. won't leak, and some of us old fellows don't like climbing up on the tail gate to get into the top drawer types. i'd buy another one tomorrow, but i think mine will last much longer than that.

I had a continentl box for years, for some reason I sold it and bought a dimond deluxe that is the sorryest built box I ever had, after a year alot of the welds were broke.the bottom fell out and the divider was begining to fall down, I was able to trade it for my old box, if unuque would build me a t style box like the dimond one I would buy it.

Yeah, from what I'm hearing, Unique IS Continental but not the same quality. I need a sturdy top to put two dogs up there so they wont do. I still havent got a response back from them either. I e-mailed Owens also, havent heard back...I need their largest box with a rack welded on top. I hope to hear from someone soon. Looks like it'll be Owens as long as they get back to me soon.

I bought a owens four season box last year and it looks pretty dang good still, it needs cleaned with mothers but other then that mine has held up well. 90 pounds with nothing in it so it is fesable to load and unload except it is bulky kind of hard to pick up from ground to the bed by yourself but can be done. can easily stick 4 dogs in it. The door latches you have to slam though or they will pop open thats one thing I do not like at all. Although after a years worth of use it seems to have gotten easier to lock close. I just close them then pull on iit to make sure they are locked I've never had them come open on me. I put a carpet in the topstorage so things wouldn't slide around, nothing has ever been wet.

I beleive the frame is wood, yes. But the one in the back of my truck is aluminum/diamond plate. Unlike one that I looked at, I want to say was an Owens, I'd have to confirm that with Dave, but anyway, it was all aluminum diamond plate. No insolation. Just plain metal with a blue corrugated plastic(?) insert laying in the bottom. Can you imagine how cold that box is in the winter time? Kind of like sticking your tongue to a flag pole just before Christmas. Worse yet, how dog gone hot in the summer? We do alot of traveling with the dogs in the warmer months, the sun beating on that bare metal?? Maybe I'm mis-informed on the sun reflecting on shiny objects creating heat, either way, this didn't sound like something I wanted for my hounds.

Unique

I just bought one this summer, it has a full top storage and not the 3/4 that is standard. Has welded braces in the lid on the front, middle and back. It has no bow in the lid. The insulation covers the entire inside not just the bottom. The only thing I don't like and I can fix is the sliding vents move too easily when I drive down my rough a$$ gravel road. I am just going to add a little felt strip in the guide and I believe that will suffice. Other wise the hinges, latches and locks all seem to be good. The welds are very smooth. It seems that alot of the mfgs have a cheap model, but spend the extra to get quality and it will pay off in the long run.

Also even with all my junk in the top I load and unload myself onto two saw horses.

Well I've heard back from Unique several times and they've given me some good prices on a custom box with a rigging rack and reinforces top.

To date Owens has still not gotten back to me after submitting their webform twice now. Thats not the way to win me over as a customer.
