Results from the NCFBA meeting and Tree Cur issue

I’ve just returned home from the NCFBA meeting – folks this was a real issue and not just a rumor. They actually passed the motion last year, but NKC was not supportive so it was dropped. Del sent an e-mail saying that this needed to be worked out or he will work it out. It was not resolved as of this meeting, but I did get the motion passed that “any proposed changes to by-laws or charter breed associations be made public in the NCFBA column and voted on by special election to be held either before the Round-Up or World Hunts when a majority of members are present.” No matter how this works out for Treeing Curs, it is a measure to protect any of the associations from under the table moves in any area. Not everyone can make that annual meeting and no one mentioned this issue publicly. We need to be informed about major changes so the majority can make a ruling.

The motion was made to do away with the final three dogs hunting off because some people felt a feist can’t hunt against a cur. We were told their style is too different for them to compete. This was voted down and the final three will continue, but no spectators in the woods. Back up handlers and family members may wait at the truck but not go to the woods on this last round. That is understandable. As for the feist not having the same style I have to agree, BUT a dog in their own style who is a tree dog and is put in squirrels can win no matter what they hunt against. I know a hot-nosed, sight dog can make any cold nosed Cur pray for mercy but equally on a bad condition day the cur can excel. I think it is still fair that the World Champion be hunted against the other top scores and was glad to see this continue.

It was very obvious that there is an issue with one small family who feels I have messed everything up five years ago! I was told this quote on quote witnessed by all there. I guess I did this by being honest about the percent of hound in my dogs. This matter was not resolved. I will continue to try to talk to Del Morgan regarding the issue. This group also feels even ¼ hound in a Cur makes them a hound. They want any hound influence eliminated and said it was not the intent for the Treeing Cur to ever be allowed to have hound and we need to get back to “grass roots”. 30 years later I think we need to continue to make progress and ask all those with a drop of Hound in their Cur to join the NCFBA, come to the hunts, show support and VOTE at the next election to be held November 2 at Noon at Gander Mountains meeting room. I think they need to see we are an asset not a detriment to the association and NKC. I really want to show a positive movement to prove our point.

Lastly, I want to say I was sad to see one thing happen today. Someone mentioned Claude and what he did to start the association and at that point, Steve Baker yelled and pointed to his dad saying, “Claude did not start this association that man right there did!” I felt it was a real slam to Claude. It may not have been his idea, but I don’t think anyone here will disagree with me when I quote a member that day who said, “he was the one who breathed life into it.” I HATE that I had to be there at the source of conflict for Claude, this is killing him and it is not the way he wants to see things go. He deserves to see his association thrive not be destroyed internally. Out of everything that was what bothered me the most.

As for me, if my dogs are no longer recognized I will fight it but it really isn’t going to make a bit of difference in my breeding program. I will continue to breed, line breed and hunt my dogs…hound blood or not. This is not an ego issue for me, but a matter of the heart. I will not let anyone tell me my dogs are not curs when they have never stepped into the woods with them. A good breeding program shows through no matter what the breed of the dog and I hope we always try to strive to create a versatile dog that suits us whether inside the box or outside.

Thank you for your time in reading this. Amy Kovac-Thomas
