Proposed Pet Limit in NC

I heard this on the radio this morning. here is the link for the story. http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1874991/

This is for the Town of Fuquay Varina in Wake County NC. This is near Cary. I cannot find it, but on the radio they said the meeting was at 7pm tonight, not sure where. If you are in that area or know someone who is, make sure you go or have someone there.

Basically saying that you can only own 3 animals or you will be considered a kennel and have the license and fees etc for that. 4 or more will be kennels and have to be on 2+ acres of land.

Fuquay Varina is on the south east side of raleigh directly east of Holly Springs. The town is a high dollar community with alot of relocates from the north.

Money talks and you know the rest of the story. Those high dollar neighborhoods don't want a pack of hounds drawing flies and then you have the noise pollution. I would suggest moving to the country but my neighbors are 1/2 mile and that is too close now.

it was for any pet, not just hounds.

anyway, an update: http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1882698/

there were over 100 people at that meeting and it was decided to take a closer look.

remember, it something like this comes up in your area, you have to show up to show your opposition or else it would pass. I congratulate the people of Fuquay for standing up to the commission.

Pet limits unconstitutional

Pet limit laws have been found unconstitutional by three different state supreme courts. In two of the decisions, it was decided that you could not limit a person's right to own as much property as he/she could afford to own. In the third, it was decided that the number (usually 3) you are limited to is arbitrary and there are no studies to back it up. Basically, there is no study to say that 3 dogs is less of a health problem (waste disposal, I guess) than 4 or even 14.

I believe the states were PA, WI and LA but I'd have to go back and look it up.

In other cases - one in Maine that I know of - just letting the town fathers know about those court rulings carried some weight. Public outcry was the deciding factor, though. I'm so glad you got a good turn out at that meeting. More of us need to keep up with local legislation and attend these meetings.

Annie

Here in Michigan we've had to deal with the 3 dog law were we live for the last 23 years. Don't know if the whole state is that way now or not but a great deal of the more populated areas are for sure. It's a pain because if you are blessed with a sensitive neighbor and have more than 3 you're in trouble regardless of the complaint. I assume this wouldn't apply to farming communites.

This is also where your KC's can get involved and your Associations like The Appalachian Houndsmen Association in NC can help. We may not be able to be at the meetings but letters and emails can be sent to county commissioner and or mayor/city councilmen. I know that we have an Mandatory Spary and Neuter issue right now in my home county in NC and we have had many letters sent in to our commissioner for KC's and ohter state organiazation.

If you know of something that comes up like this - get us the name and address or the email address of the local government officials and we will certainly do our best to get a letter out to them.

Contact information can always be found on our website.

Yeah, that's pretty much the plan. Everyone needs to be looking at "Home Rule" very very closely.
