Big Game English Blood

I know that alot of you fella's that get on here that hunt big game are using the Lightfoot breeding. What I'm wondering is what other lines some of you are using and/or have hunted with?

Thanks

If you look under the English Classifieds, you'll see a thread for Triple D English kennels owned by Don Myers, and a stud ad on GRNITECH GRCH'PR' BRIAR VALLEY NITE PROWLER. That line of dogs is known for their grit, cold nose, speed and quick strike dogs. I have a young male out of Prowler and Kate that is INSANE on bear scent. I dont even hunt bear, and am having a tough time breaking him from them. I would look up Don, I'm sure he'd put you onto some guys that run his line on big game, they'd be able to give you allot more input than I can.

We have a Swamp Rooster male, and he's a good cold nosed bear dog. He's one of the best Rig dogs you could ask for. He more than makes up his weaknessess with his strength as a honest rig/start dog. He's the lead dog a good percentage of time. Only lately is one of our Walkers really starting to outshine him, but he still learned it from the Redtick. But there's another thing, he's worth having around just to teach dogs to rig.

I have hunted with just about every english line. The Lightfoot dogs are the real deal and can get it done. Don't try to make a coon dog into a big game dog...... go with what works.

I know Dennis Steinhauser's Northridge bloodline "almost" got me to try a different breed and he had a list of big game guys that hunted his line.

Mark Haggerty

Mark has a nite champion Tuff dog that is throwing some real nice bear dogs. He sold a pup that is barely over a year old named Wild Bill that is already treeing bears by himself. Two or three others out of the same litter went to be coon dogs but they are running them on bear now. I believe the Parish boys got a dog named Bud that is out of Tuff that has treed a couple bears by himself. From what I heard Bud and Wild Bill are the lead dogs in both packs.

I got a female out of them same litter as Wild Bill. Rigging machine on coon. Cold nose.

Saw a littermate to her named Smoke split tree with his dad at 7 months old and had the coon.

Bear dogs

I have been told that my line of dogs make good bear dogs. Bigfoot on here has a female he runs on bear. Sounds like he really likes her.

I think my dog goes back to Steinhausers line of Northridge dogs. I use him on coon, but he's as cold nose track minded sit on your but as they come, and has some grit to. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. You can also bet that if he tree's he probably has the meat.

I live in East Tennessee and have used english hounds to hunt bear all over the United States. We are currently hunting the third and fourth generation of our dogs. It started with a female out of Bullards Captain Kool and The Speckeled Bird. Two of the best females I ever hunted with were out of a Kool son named Elk River Rocky which was a full litermate to Smooth Talking Jed. These dogs have more heart and grit than any other strain of dogs i ever hunted with. You can hunt them on and on day after day when most dogs need a day or two to rest these hounds will keep giving you all they got. They will stick the meanest bear you could imagine in a pack or right by thereselves. I guess the worse thing about them is maybe to much grit. We have alot of vet bills with these dogs and tend to get some killed. They are good tree dogs and fairly good nose on them. We can usually trail up a track that is up to 10 to 12 hours old and jump the bear. From years of experience on breeding these dogs I know that the grit and heart comes from the Captain kool blood. And it has crossed well with swamp rooster which would really be neuce river and Wilcox breeding.

I have been hunting and linebreeding a line that have been used primarily on bear these dogs have alot of the traits that most people want in a good beardog they are cold nosed and they have good speed along with some grit. they go back to Turkey ridge Racket and SUGAR CREEK J.R. . I have been hunting this line for the last 20 years along with a alot of other people in this area with pretty good results.

I had one back many years ago out of Captain Kool and a Turkey Ridge Racket female that was a heck of a bear dog. She could trail up bears that alot of todays start dogs would'nt have a chance of jumping. She too had all the heart and grit a dog needs to be a good bear dog.
Truck, do the dogs you hunt now have the same ability to trail up real old tracks as they did back 20 years ago? I'm looking for somthing to outcross on with cold trailing ability and the brains to use it.

JERRIOTT, I have a few here that still have the same blood and can still cold trail and jump alot of old tracks. That is the reason I like this line of dogs and have been line breeding as much as I can to keep those same traits. Some of the best ones Ive had here have been linebred, I like to keep that cold nose. I am expecting a litter of pups sept. 30 that are line bred with this same bloodline ,that I am excited about. Another trait that these dogs have that I like is they are natural rig dogs, very few of these dogs that I have owned would not strike from the truck.
