I've run with literally hundreds of different beagles and of all those, I've seen one that had enough treeing instinct that had she been encourage, she probably could have made a dog that would tree game. I don't think your chances are very good at all that you could go out and get a beagle pup and end up with a tree dog no matter how much time you spent training. Just my opinion.

In a word...NO. Oh I know you always hear about the mixed up dog or this breed of dog that someone had that treed squirrels like there was no tomorrow. These are rare and sometimes man made. In my opinion Beagles are great dogs but they have too many traits that are contrary to what I want in a squirrel dog. For instance their nose is too cold, they often won't handle good (Handle like a hound.) etc.

Just my opinion.

Mike

When I first started working with Dogs, Beagles were my first pick
I stated getting them in Colinsville, AL I later found out that that
was not the best place to get dogs you never know what you are
going to get. You are so pumped up on the drive home thinking that the Beagle you just got is going to run the hair off a rabbit and then they trun out to be a cul. This one Gyp I got was both a Rabbit dog and she would tree a squirrel in a heart beat but I think she had some Feist mixed in there somewhere.

Rufus
Better stay away from Collinsville.
Some of the old dog traders that beat folks so bad have left. I noticed last week while getting honey there were very few still there.
They can only beat you so many times.

There are a lot of Beagles there that have some cur or fiest in them, some of those will tree, but mostly in the ground.

I know for a fact that Beagles can make good tree dogs! There was an older gentleman that lived a few miles from me all his life that always kept Beagles that were flat out tough on coon! That is all he hunted and the beagles were all he used. I hunted many a night with the old man and was always impressed! I dont know if it was just from years of breeding this particular line of beagles or if the old man had a few training secrets but he could make coon dogs out of his beagles generation after generation!

Coonsmen , this old man was an old Italian by the name of Louie. I never could even pronounce his last name let alone try to spell it! By the way, I see where you are inquiring about the Black mouth curs. I just went and picked one up in May. So far I like him real well. Very intelligent and full of grit! He is just now 4 mos. old. I'll be able to tell you more on down the road but so far I like him real well. I bought mine off Jonathan Richards in Arkansas. He might still have some pups. I would highly recomend him to do business with, and so far would highly recomend his pups, very healthy! They are out of Ladner stock which by what little I know is what you would want. The lady that was mentioned in the other post from Michigan also has pups that are supposed to be out of nice dogs, I almost bought one of those but it was so far to drive and Jonathan had his family meet me in Mo. to pick mine up therefore saving me a bunch! I think either or L.H. or Curt Ladner would provide you a nice dog! They are definately full of natural treeing instinct! I could be wrong but I dont think you will find any in Illinois.
