i got a 3 yr old hound that just started to climb trees. he is know climbing every tree he can climb and im talkiin 40 plus ft its gettin out of control.. any solutions you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. thanks michael west

I have heard if a dog is climbing trees to cut its nails so they bleed a little bit.

A little money for some antibiotics or a dead dog or you laying in the hospital or morg. I'll take my chances and cut the dogs nails alittle short!

dog booties, the kind for keeping dogs from cutting theyre feet on snow and ice. They come in 4 packs and only last a few hunts but its worth it. But only put them on the back feet cause thats what the dog climbs with

thanks you guys i appreciate it. i go with the booties for now and see how that works, i had a guy here to tell me to cut his nails real short so they bleed but this dog is so crazy as far as gettin the coon im not real sure pain would stop him,

I once had one that started out climbing leaning trees and then went on to trees that were straight up and down. Eventually, after 6-8 mos of her climbing I finally had enough. I called a hunting buddy and told him if I didn't call back in 20min to come look for me (hunting alone). I then proceeded to climb up to her and leash her up. We had a LONG discussion all the way to the ground about her climbing trees. After that she was done climbing and so was I.

I know some folks will say I was abusing my dog, but when you see one 40 ft in the air more once, you realize sooner or later the odds will catch up with them.

I had one that climbed 3 trees in about 2 weeks. The last one, my buddy climbed up to get him out and while I was trying to get a rope to him, the dog fell about 30-40 ft out of the tree. His tail and back bothered him for about 2 weeks, but never climbed another. Didn't even want to cross a log that was up off the ground. I guess I was lucky he didn't get hurt worst though

i dont know how to make them stop once they get good at it--

i put a leash on them --yank them down hard when they first start doing it-- havent had a real bad one in 20 years so i think it helps-- - years ago i had one that was real bad- was hurt a bunch of times-- was before i had tracking collars and once she fell down inside a hollow tree- i was very lucky i found her--i could hear her-- and i thought she was in a culvert by the sound--- but wasnt any culvert i could find -- -- walked rite by her a few times-- had to go home and get a ladder and a rope to get her out -- another time i climbed tree-- let her down two leashes and swung her on a limb=-- dropped leash and she fell into crotch at bottom of tree and wedged tite-- almost dead by the time i got down-- she lived to ripe old age but it was just luck she wasnt killed--

Last Sunday a top spring 2yr old Tequila Sunrise femalewas killed from falling out of a tree. She was a nice one. Its a bad habit. Sometimes it takes them falling out to break it, that is if they live.

I've never had one turn into a climber, but I think the first time you catch em at it, leash and yank em down hard onto the ground to get things straight about climbing right off as was suggested by Pete. I've heard of some crazy stories of dogs climbing way up in trees..and what on earth are you supposed to do? Seems like clipping they're nails short..and keeping them extra short all the time would help. If they cant get the grip they cant climb. I wonder if it starts with a dog that jacks a tree alot? I have a walker male, young, that jacks the tree and sometimes "sticks" for a bit before falling. I used to laugh thinking it was funny, but the last time he did it I got tired of it and punched him in the butt (it was at eye level). He still jacks the tree but not as bad and doesnt cling anymore. Who knows, maybe it starts there and gets worse and worse lol.

I saw a pic sometime ago, hopefully someone can post it again. It was of a huge cedar or hemlock tree with a few dogs in it..highest one must have been 50 feet up or so. I think there was a cat in the tree top. It was an amazing photo, but I dont envy the guy that walked into that tree!

I have one that just now started climbing trees at two years old. He won't jump, but if it's got and angle or low limbs, he's in it. Started at a nigt hunt. He climbed and was fighting with a coon out over the water, fell in and did it like 3 times in a row. After that, he hasn't stopped...

His mother and uncle were some of the worst climbers, and at 11 years old, still do. His dad used to, but after two good spills, they say he don't...
