Do you hunt alone?

I typically hunt with friends, it is very rare that I go "alone". I guess I started out hunting with older folks when I was too young to drive and that was always one of the draws to coonhunting for me; the fellowship. However as I have gotten older I have noticed that most folks with a really good dog often take time to hunt that dog alone, single it out, which in turn seems to add a new dimension to that dogs hunting ability.
I have tried going alone, but it seems that the first few times I always ended up with bad hunts, the dog went into the worst heck hole when there was no one with me as I crossed big water or ventured into a thick cutover.
My son is now 13 and we went last night just ourselves, which is rare....Boy did we have fun. My old dog and pup put a coon up in about 20 minutes, then I went to another spot and turned the pup loose alone...That turnout did not produce a coon but was still good for the pup as it's what a young dog needs.

I guess I was thinking last night about what has kept me from hunting alone...Safety is the one answer that seems to be the most prevelant. I am a safety leader work and there are risks associated with hunting, and being alone increases the risk. The other reason I came up with was habit, I have been stuck in a rut created by my own habits.

Do most of you hunt alone, or mostly with a friend(s)?

I hunt alone about 95% of the time and only take 1 dog 100% of the time. It kind of sucks sometimes but on the other hand you can't blame others dogs for the foolish things you dog does and the hunting is alot easier than what you have I think. Hope your son keeps hunting with you.

I hunt alone 95% of the time. I feel like I can pay better attention to what the dog is doing if I'm not distracted by other dogs or people. I can come and go as I want, too.

I enjoy hunting one young dog alone the most. When they get to the point they get pretty consistent, they start to bore me. But I'll throw another dog in at times. I absolutely HATE to hunt 3 or more dogs at once.

I personally don't consider a dog finished unless it has been hunted alone most of a season.

Almost always alone. I usually hunt 1 or 2 dogs. I really like to hunt a young dog alone once they know what they are doing.

Hunting Alone

I hunt alone 99% of the time, usually one dog, sometimes two.I want to hear all of the strike, track, locate and of course treeing when in hearing. If I want to B.S. I do something else besides hunt. The very few times I have someone with me it's my seven year old grandson.

I think Its important to hunt alone or at least 1 dog alone if its young and your trying to single it out. They need independance. But on the other hand Im clumbsy and fall at times over my own feet and I may need someone to help me up! Heck I even fall in the creeks! Or that real low barb wire thats 20 yrs old thats 1 inch off the ground! How many of you have done that before? Uh huh lots

Hunting Alone

That's the majority of my hunting. Most of the time I just take one dog. Sometimes (rarely), I'll take two.

When hunting by myself, I like to hunt woods that I know well.

If I have a pup, I'll always drag it along, but eventually it has to be singled out if it's going to be a coon dog!
