Snake Bite

Here's a subject I have never heard anyone talking about.

Has anyone ever had their coondog get bit by a snake. Just wondering if there were any long term side effects that may cause problems later down the line. Any old timers got anything input on this subject.

I had one bit about two years ago. No problems so far.

Unfortunately, we have it probably once every 2 years. We have so much water around us sometimes it is unavoidable. We always have penicillin in the fridge. We shoot them up with it for about 3-4 days and all is well with the world. The dogs bounce back so well, its amazing how something that can kill us, the dogs just usually turn out fine. Now getting bit on the face/nose is another thing, the swelling can cut off air ways, we have always been lucky its been on the legs. Face bites can kill pretty quickly, and mulitple bites can also.

A lot of folks keep liquid benedryl in the dogbox for such cases. It will help with the swelling.

best stuff by far for snake bites. also give the penicillin to prevent secondary infection. I've had tree dogs bitten on different occasions and they all were fine by the next day.
the worst bitten was a black an tan. she got it in the head somewhere. when she came up to me her head looked like a rottie she was so swollen up. I gave her a good dose of benadryl every 3-4 hours and by the next day she looked normal.

Had my pup and young dog get bit by a copperhead in their kennels. Got my young dog on the back foot and my pup on her foot and ear. They looked horrible. Took them to the vet cause the pup was so young, gave them something to help with the swelling and said to give them benedryl. Took my pup awhile to get back to herself, but didn't slow the young dog down at all. Jessica

I have been useing this method for more years than I care to remember.
Give the dog benedryl and lard. It will coat the stomach and keep the poison from getting into the blood stream fast. If it is a face bite take the collar off for the head will swell and it cant breath. Give the benedryl and lard for 3 days and it should be fine. this is a old timers cure for snake bite, also pour coal oil on the bite and it will keep it from getting infected, I learned this from my grandfather yrs ago

I get each of my dogs bit on average of once a year. Sometime less sometime more.

The best "proven" thing to do is give an injection of dexamethizone and an injection of penicillin. The dex is a cortizone type steriod which is used extensively to treat swelling. The antibiotic is to keep down infection. Snake fangs are covered with bacteria.

I used to keep a shot of each at all times, I would get them from the vet. Now I keep a bottle of each. The bottles have experation dates of a few years. If I give shots within a few hours I can usually hunt them in 2 days. The main thing is to get the swelling down as it can cut off circulation and cause tissue damage.

I don't know if all vets will sell you these medicines. And I think you can get them at some feed stores.

Lots of good info to know.

I had a three month pup get bit a couple of years ago. Do not know what kind of snake it was. But she was SICK. We got her to the vet as soon as we could. It took her awhile to recover. She swelled like a St. Benard.LOL She did get huge. Looked like she was gonna pop.

I was just really wondering if there were any long term effects of snake bites that could show up later in life. Ya know like heart problems, liver, cancers, fertillity. Anything like that.

I've never heard of any lingering side effects from snakebites. I'm not a vet nor do I claim to know it all, but that's my experience!! I've been around dogs my entire life and have seen several bitten. None have ever had long term effects. Dad had a black dog get bit on the back left leg by a rattler that took a couple of weeks to get over. The meat rotted out and smelled horrible. Dad, the ever caring man that he can be, didn't do a thing for it. It healed on it's own and we hunted that dog another 5 or 6 years til he gave him away at the age of 10 before he died at the house. He gave him away because I picked him out of my uncle's litter when I was 4. He didn't want me to see him die, that was pretty cool of him I guess. Anyway, there shouldn't be any long term effects from snakebites!! Sorry for rambling!!
