tape wormer

I was wondering what everyone uses to get rid of them. I like droncit, but it is awful expensive. I have not had any luck with the no-mo wormer.

I use ivermec for hook worms, but it does not get the tapes. What is the panacur good for and where do you get it.

Panacur is for hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms.
Usually have to get it from a vet around here.

Go to a farm store and get Safe guard horse wormer.Same active ingredient as panacur. You can get SG for dogs but its more than twice the cost of the horse.Same active ingredient.

For tapeworms the best product I have used is Praziquantel. This is the active ingredient in most tape wormers. I did notice that it is not the active ingredient in Adam's no-mo tape wormer. I normally use a brand called Trade Winds. Tapeworms will be gone within 2 days after the use of Praziquantel.

Fenbendazole is the active ingredient in all of the Safeguard and Panacur wormers. It is labled for tapes on the Safegaurd canine. I have had it be successful and unsuccessful on tapes, but it has always done a good job on all other intestinal parasites.

I worm with Fenbendazole every 3 months. Ivermectin monthly for heartworm prevention. Praziquantel as needed for tape worms (observe stool for white segments). If I control the fleas, I usually don't have tapes.

JUST A QUESTION, HOW DO YOU KNOW POSITIVELY IF A HOUND HAS TAPE WORMS? (without going to the vet's office)

Look at the stool. You will see white segments of the tape worm in the stool, it will resemble rice (make sure you don't plan on eating chinese that day). You may also see little egg sacks stuck to their rear end. These egg sacks look like brown rice. You don't have to dig around they are easy to detect.

Thanks for the insight...will tape worms make a dog look poor or sickly? Not that any of mine have problems, just curious when I seen this about tape worms, never thought about them being in dogs, have heard of people having them tho. Also, when tested at the Vet's Office, they show up in the test automatically or is a special test that has to be done? Like I said, never really thought about tape worms in a hound...

Test for all intestinal parasites are done fecal examination. All parasites except for tape needs to be done microscopically. Tapes are generally not considered very harmful, but all parasites can cause complications is left untreated.

I'm not sure about a per pound dosage. I just always buy a commercial tape wormer and use the dosage on the bottle. Like I said, most of these contain praziquantel.

the test done for worms is a fecal float. where fecal samples are immersed in a soultion which causes the eggs to float and stick to a mircoscope slide. there are 2 types of tapeworms found in dogs and there eggs look nothing alike. also tapeworm eggs are not found in the samples as easily as other worm eggs. you will typicall see the segments in the poop before the eggs will be found in a float.

Im sure I will get hammered for this, but I use Turpentine Spirits.
So far it has worked.
Cheap too.
I use Ivomec, for everything else.

Equimax is good, but I use Zimectrin Gold horse wormer.
Becareful how much you use, b/c you don't want to overdose.
I give my dogs about a pencil eraser amount ever month. It has Ivermectin-heartworms and alot of other stuff and
praziquantel-tapeworms. I give them a 50 lb dose. You can either get it from Jeffers Pet
or from the local feed store(co-op). It saves ALOT of money and vet visits as well.

www.jeffersequine.com has both products on there.

2cc's ain't gonna do anything, Safe Guard Goat Wormer is nothing more then liquid Panacur, which is good for all four types of intestinal worms (i.e. hooks, rounds, whips, tapes) Dosage is 1cc per 5 lbs., administered for 3 days straight. The active ingredient is 10% fenbendazole. But the main thing about tape worms is that they can be caused by FLEAS. Treat your kennel, dog, ect. Get rid of the fleas. And No, I am not a vet, I an however a vet tech though. So, I don't need any smart ass quotes made back. I recommend for someone who doesn't have that much knowledge about coonhound health or dog health, check out www.beaglesunlimited.com. They offer alot of info about dog health which can be easliy understood. And by all means, find a Vet in your area and develope a relationship with them.
And if you feel you need to talk to me about this post, please call me at 336-710-7356.

Thanks Felecia (NOT Mike, he's been blamed for enough crap on here)

It has worked for years for me. I use Frontline on the dogs also.

Some things work for some, while it may not work for other's. Best of luck to all on keeping their dog's healthy.

Thanks again for all the info. I really appreciate it. I rarely have any problem with tapes, but occasionally buy a dog with them or pick up a case from a coon with fleas.

You may want to try Revolution, it does fleas, heartworm prevention, ear mites (which I have seen alot in coon hounds), monthly treatment. I use it at work. I personally use 1/2 cc Ivermec for the earmites, Panacur as normal deworming, Ivermec for Heartworm prev.. And yeah some things work for some and doesn't for others. But at least try the correct dosage and I am sure you will save yourself some money.

Thanks Felecia

Squirt about 1/4 to 1/2 cc in each ear and massage it in.
