Folks think any dog can be fixed or is worth feeding ... the guys that actually hunt hard and know what responsibility and honesty are all about still know what to do with their copy of "No Bad Dogs".

I've been on the lookout for a nice dog myself. I've came across a few dogs that most people would of really liked but just did'nt suite me. I in turn sold them and made the new owners aware of why I did'nt like them. Did they need shot just cause I did'nt want them no. They have made others very happy. And I'm still on the lookout for the dog for me. A nice one is hard to find, but your not going to get one without trying out others.

Feeders

If you bought a dog based on what you saw it do off feeders, I would say that is your fault! Feeders are for starting pups. That is no way to try a dog that you are wanting to coonhunt with!

To me, the first rule of trying out any dog, is to try it in your own woods! Cut em loose on deer. If they don't run deer, it won't phase them!

Rest assured, there are plenty of honest coonhunters out there that will truthfully represent their dogs. But, beware of promoters (my opinion).

ok my 2 cents

You Are not going to buy a good broke coondog for $900.00 bucks you might get a dog that can tree a coon but not a coondog theirs a world of diffrence the really good ones are few and far between and when they are for sale they will bring sevral thousand dollars . 2 never buy any hound if the guy selling it is telling you the dog is perfect they all have faults and a honest seller will tell you what they are when you hear them you have to decided if they are something you can live with or not ,then it's time to hunt with the dog 2or3 times if you like the dog pony up the cash if not keep looking but I would advise you to give up the Idea that you can buy a good one cheap it ain't going to happen
good luck with your search but rember if it sounds to good to be true it probaly is.

honalieh,

I beg to DIFFER WITH YOU, on the use of COON FEEDERS. There are other reasons that people put feeders out, than to START PUPS. I put them out, for nights when I don't want to hunt late, & do alot of walking. In other words it's to keep my dogs from hunting to wide. Other people put them out, to try an keep the coon away from PRIVATE PROPERTY, where no hunting is allowed, & I'm sure that there are other reasons also.

As for your POLITICAL VIEWS, I'll go along with the DENIM & LEATHER BOOTS, but you might want to CONSIDER A JERSEY with a BEAR, COLT OR EVEN AN EAGLE ON IT for next year. LOL

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY A GOOD......

Not Always^^^^^^. for the most part that's true. In our experience with our oldest hound, he came from someone that some folks consider a 'dog jockey'. He was less than $900, and worth a hole lot more. Couldn't ask for a better coonhound. Many folks that know him want pups off him. He doesn't have a NT CH title because of his handler, not because of his ability. You don't always have to 'mortgage the farm' to get yourself a nice hound that will suit your needs.

Ron,

A started pup that runs and trees wild coon is not over priced at $900.00. If you take that same started pup and put 60 hard nights on it, and some "finish"...you could have a dog that is worth well more than that.

It sounds like your problem is the definition of "started". If the dog(s) you bought showed you coon, over feeders or in the wild, and you were satisfied with that....then you got exactly what you paid for. A started pup that runs a deer is never a good thing, but is sure can be expected out of a started pup. That pup is not ruined, it's just going to take some work to get him broke...that's part of the work that you have to do, and part of the "finish".

I don't fancy myself as a dog trader. I raise a lot of pups, start and hunt some of my own stuff. I'm looking for the "special" ones out of my stock, and those that won't ever make coon dogs...they don't ever go anywhere. Those that will tree coon, but maybe don't meet my specs, they find other homes at reasonable prices. The prospective buyer has the opportunity to ask all the questions they want, and to hunt the dog any way they like before any money changes hands......nothing to hide here. If they buy a dog, hunt it for two weeks and decide they don't like it....the way I see it, it's their dog.....to do with what they want.

My advice to you is to only buy a dog when you are satisfied it is exactly like you want. Finding a dog that suits you is rarely a one night, one week, or one month proposition. Most times a particular individual will spend as much shopping for a dog as they will spend actually buying the dog they eventually find.

I don't know where you are from, or what you are looking for, but drop me a PM and I'll be happy to let you know if and when I have something like you are looking for. I've sold a few dogs, most of them right here on this board. Most times the dogs are better than the buyer thought they were getting. I'm particular about what I keep and sell some pretty good young dogs that just don't suit me.....don't think that makes me a dog trader though.

I really hope someone comes forward to give you a hand. You're a bit of a ways from us, so that wouldn't help much. The man we got Smoke from normally has some real nice hounds, but like I said, we're in Ohio. Hope ya find the right hound for you real soon.

Ron,

I based my response on this post. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am not defending anything or anyone. I made an offer to help you find a dog.....take it or leave it.

I guess I have to agree. I do put a few feeders out around the house, and stock some coon around them. And, on some nights when (1) I don't feel like hunting, (2) it doesn't get dark til 9:30-10:00, or (3) my wife took the truck, I can walk up the road, tree a coon, and walk back home, and not spend a lot of time.

The point I wanted to make is : "Don't try a dog out off feeders". That's not much of a trial or test.
