Ron,
A started pup that runs and trees wild coon is not over priced at $900.00. If you take that same started pup and put 60 hard nights on it, and some "finish"...you could have a dog that is worth well more than that.
It sounds like your problem is the definition of "started". If the dog(s) you bought showed you coon, over feeders or in the wild, and you were satisfied with that....then you got exactly what you paid for. A started pup that runs a deer is never a good thing, but is sure can be expected out of a started pup. That pup is not ruined, it's just going to take some work to get him broke...that's part of the work that you have to do, and part of the "finish".
I don't fancy myself as a dog trader. I raise a lot of pups, start and hunt some of my own stuff. I'm looking for the "special" ones out of my stock, and those that won't ever make coon dogs...they don't ever go anywhere. Those that will tree coon, but maybe don't meet my specs, they find other homes at reasonable prices. The prospective buyer has the opportunity to ask all the questions they want, and to hunt the dog any way they like before any money changes hands......nothing to hide here. If they buy a dog, hunt it for two weeks and decide they don't like it....the way I see it, it's their dog.....to do with what they want.
My advice to you is to only buy a dog when you are satisfied it is exactly like you want. Finding a dog that suits you is rarely a one night, one week, or one month proposition. Most times a particular individual will spend as much shopping for a dog as they will spend actually buying the dog they eventually find.
I don't know where you are from, or what you are looking for, but drop me a PM and I'll be happy to let you know if and when I have something like you are looking for. I've sold a few dogs, most of them right here on this board. Most times the dogs are better than the buyer thought they were getting. I'm particular about what I keep and sell some pretty good young dogs that just don't suit me.....don't think that makes me a dog trader though.
