Kudzu_blue's hunt tonight 1-5-04 (pics)

He got in a quick drop before the rain set in and slammed a coon right off (no feeder buckets), our nt ch gyp Rosie had the meat. Kudzu said it was a pretty big coon especially for around here it looks. We're going to weigh it tomorrow and see.

LOL...

... I WAS going to just post about the nice pix but VA and MD Plotts has me chuckling too. Looks like ROsie did a great job. Glad they got a hunt in before the rain, nice looking coon.

Amy I dont know whats wrong with coons anymore. I do know they have had a problem with drinking for years.
Several years ago I guided a cast out to Fancy Gap. The dogs made a tree kinda deep, but the worst part was the laurels. Man we were crawling 50% of the time. Well right before we got to the tree the laurels ended and it was beautiful timber.
We scored the coon and figured it would be just as fast and alot better if we went around the thicket. So off we go out the side of the mountain instead of right back down.
About 15mins into the walk all 4 dogs just start raising h*ll. we walk about another min or so and the smell of sourmesh filled everyones nose. I told the guys we were about to get killed and I didnt care what type of h*ll we had to walk threw Im getting off the mountain now.
Down we go and I mean high steppin it. Noone notice the smell getting stronger. We didnt walk 50 yards and we were right slap in the middle of moonshine set up. We were all scared sh!tless.
Everyone was looking around what do we do and such. I said screw it theres an old road bed lets get out of here. Whole time the dogs are roaring like crap. One of the guys yells d*mn theres a coon. After a few seconds of shinning while walking we spotted 3 coons sitting up.
So as you can see coons have had a drinking problem for a while now. Its a shame I know, but as you found out it makes for some easy coonhunting. LOL
And for those who will ask. Yes, this is a very true story.
We walk the ol road out and guess who was waiting on us back on the dirt road. Yep the landowner himself. Of course he had his handy dandy shotgun. We were about 50 yards from him when he turned his lights on and yell who in the h*ll are you? I yelled back and told him it was me, and we were on a coonhunt. I had permission to hunt the land so I really wasnt to worried about things after I saw who was waiting. We chatted for a second about how the hunt was going. As we started to walk on to the truck he hollared at me to come back for a second.
All he asked was did we find anything strange?
Nope, what do you mean strange?
Nothing, but do me a favor and try to stay off that ridge OK? You boys d*mn near got shot.
Notta problem, and with that I have never hunted that spot again.

you're very lucky you werent shot, its the same reason why they like sourcorn buckets, stuffs got to be fermenting. **** alcoholic coon, you're lucky they didnt jump out of the tree onto your head, to protect that still.

Amy, I know what happened. That coon was a quart low. Looks like it blowed an engine. There is a way you can check the oil in a coon but make sure you're wearing gloves. LOL!!!!

Rosie looks good on that tree.

I was able to make a drop last night. Struck one track....it was a bad track....but treed it on the outside.

Take care. If you get a chance you need to post an updated pic. of Megan. I'll bet she's half grown by now.

Trying to think back some 10 to 12 years ago, but if I had to choose one it looked more along the lines of the second pic.
Of course it was dark, and I was scared sh!tless. Only real looking around was done while still high steppin it out of that friggin mountain.
Several barrels were around, and two sided shed (that I would have been afriad to stand under from fear that it could fall at any second) was there. By far the smell is what I remember the most, well that and the true fear i was feeling.
In over 20 years of coonhunting that hunt is always freash on my mind. Noway will I ever forget that night.

she's 2 years old, can move a track well and trees very hard. She does have 1 litter of pups, they are 8 months old. I kept a male off her, he may be louder than her.

mike

she is smokey river on top and dalton /ararat river breeding on the bottom.she is out of local bear dog stock.she hunts medium to long and has no trouble with other dogs.she is a climber and makes some pretty interesting situations at trees some times.i have had to go up and get her more than once.

she has had one litter and the one we kept is going with the dogs and opening on track at 8 months.hates a coon. we have tentative plans to breed her to raisin cain when she comes in,which should be the last of feburary or the first of march. we get compliments on her tree style from alot of folks that have hunted with her. tree hugging coondog.
