Benching Question?

I have a young female who I am trying to finish out to GRCH... My problem w/ her, that I have not been able to break yet, granted this is the first hound I've trained, is while showing she will NEVER keep her head straight. She is always looking at something in whatever direction... what are some things to try to break her of this? Thanks for any help.

We have a girl whose almost a year old. Got her around 9 mos. and she would do anything BUT stand still! Wouldn't keep her front end straight at the same time as her back, and all she wanted to do was give kisses and kiss the air if no one was there to lick. She was a poster child for doggy Ritalin!

Took 3 mos. of working her at LEAST every other night to calm her down. She still turns her head occasionally, just "acch" her and if she doesn't turn back around pop the side of her face (not hard, just to get her attention) on the side she is turning to... it's worked. Major improvement, she's going to start showing in two weeks.

Some of these dogs just have to much pup in them until their at least 1 sometimes 2 to sit perfectly. The key is to keep working them consistantly with positive re-inforcement. Don't get upset and angry and start yelling or hitting... that just leads to cowering and no trust between you and the dog. If you feel yourself getting frustrated and angry, take a break. They can sense it and will more then likely get aggitated themselves.

What you are saying sounds normal to me, just keep working frequently and stay positive. Should work out on it's own with some time and age on the dog.

I had and still have sometimes that problem with my dog. So I took a Plastic shopping bag and and after I set him on the bench I started smacking it around behind him, on his sides, etc. I held his head in place when he went to move and told him "No". But you may need to tap them some to keep from turning. They'll learn to look with their eyes then.
I also took out various other things, like a frisbee to throw around and see if they watch it. I filled a container with paper clips and shook that around. Try and few things and see what works.

playing a t.v....

and blasting it on mtv helps. LOL! radios moved into different areas you are working are great for sound. and don't forget the ol idea of a mirror. that helps you as well. just a few ideas. i have a basement now and best thing for me to work a hound in. but outside is equally important for bench training. the more distractions...the better. i just LOVE it when my hound smells a coon at an event. LOL! i sure have had some funny experiences on that!! LOL!!! or "pancake mix" for the treeing contest circle. LOL!!!!

We also work them inside and out, when they are inside there are no distractions, which of coarse there are plenty of at a show. So when we take them outside on the bench, we tie other dogs around the area we are working in and sit outside talking to each other and walking around the bench while they are on it. Gets them used to things going on.

i have to agree with you on the distractions. we work our dogs with a lot a noise going on. when we have a problem dog we'll walk some of our other dogs around them when they are on the bench and teach them to stand no matter what. at ao this year i think it was working with the distractions around that saved the day. my shi dog was on the bench for his class when someone dropped a bench. yes shi thought about heading out but could be brought back under control promptly. (he probably thought someone was out to kill him tho when that bench fell. lol)
i've had embarrassing moments with my hounds. had the one dog just jump off his bench and take off when he whiffed the coon they were using for a treeing contest. my daughter had him all set up and stood back and rascal jumped and trucked out. the look on the judges face was classic.
never had the experience of using pancake flour for the treeing circle. but my one dog rolled in the line at one contest and they had to redo it. she sits to tree. she treed they told us the minute was up. patches looked at the time then calmly got to her feet went to the line and rolled. lol

Patches..

Ours haven't jumped from the bench YET... but this one girl we had the problems with did FALL off the bench her first time on it. Gooberhead wouldn't sit still and was moving so much her back feet slipped, fell flat on her butt on the concrete. That pretty much sealed the deal for the judge I would say! He didn't come back our way after that... how embarassing!

my daughter was showing a dog for a friend of ours. she had him on the bench and all stacked. the judge went to the other dog first. we have no idea what was going on in clydes head but when the jusdge came over and put his hand's on clyde's back, clyde jumped about a mile and fell off the bench landing on his side. the poor jusdge just stood there then all of a sudden just said, 'well i hope i didn't kill him.' the whole room laughed while lori got clyde back up and stacked again. clyde did go on that day and won best of show. btw clyde wasn't a nervous dog or anything. he was a very laid back blue. we don't know if he dozed off or what. but it sure was funny.
