I dont know about where you live but I can tell its bow season around here. In the past 3 days I've had bow hunters ask me not to hunt certain areas for a while. They said coon dogs spook deer. Thats the biggest bunch of crap I've heard.

I'll stay a way cause I have so much I cant hunt but I'll also point out its not true. And invite them to come with to prove a point.

last fall, I actually had some deer come in to a tree to see what all the excitement was about.

I don't know how many times that I've been standing in a field while the dogs are running a track, when I turn on my light I can see several deer looking back. They know that they are not being chased, and don't get too excited. I had to prove this to some of my bowhunter buddies, because they asked me not to hunt certain areas.

Several years ago I believe UKC published a study done by the Univ. Of Georgia. They studied radio collared deer if I remember right and the effects hunting dogs had on them. If I remember right even if the dogs ran the deer out of the county, the deer where back in their home territory withing 24 hours.

I treed a coon 100 yards from where I shot this guy 6 hours earlier....




Coonhunting dosent bother deer one bit, but you will NEVER, EVER convince the hardcore deer hunters of this, So why bother?

First of all, I bow hunt, but I also learn from my experiences. Big bucks could care less if hunters & dogs are out there at night. I have had them stand within 20-40 yards of me and never spooking. I have had them bedded down, and they never bother to get up.

I will tell the guys and girls who bow hunt the best time to scout during season is when you are coon hunting. The scent you leave behind means nothing to those deer especially if you coon hunt that spot frequently. Many of the fallacies associated with hunter's understanding of deer are due to people think deer think like us, and that is totally untrue.

Two of the biggest bucks ever harvested here near me loved to follow me around at night while coonhunting. Seen them ole boys alot for several years until someone caught up with em. Dogs don't bother deer....

leon Dunn and I walked up on a nice 8 point buck a few weeks ago while walking into the tree. We stood within 50 FEET of this deer and looked and talked and he never even got up.
Many times I have deer stay in the field with me and the dogs, although usually not after the season has been open for a while.

I agree good luck explaining it to any hard core deer hunter. I have tried for years. They dont believe me when i tell them I have shot a deer out of the same tree I treed a coon in the night before. They just cant grasp that.

Last year I took a couple young guys out, they are serious deer hunters and they asked me not to hunt thier land. So we went to some state property got treed just off a pasture loaded with deer eye ball. The deer never flinched and them boys were amazed.

coondawg Im glad you said that I have new ammo this year. I will wear that theory out in the near future

You cant even get in a club around here if you tell them you coon hunt.I've tried it for a year now.From now on I'm just a regular ol turkey and deer hunter!! I'll coon hunt after deer season and they will never even know I've been there.I love to deer hunt myself but the clubs in this state are full of crazy folks.They dont want a hound anywhere near the land they lease.
