A good reason not to hunt a Walker!!

In the AKC world hunt they were able to name the breed world champions two days ago. The Walker guys have to wait till tonight to find out who the top dog is. So if your inpatient then hunting an off colored dog may be something you should look into.

You are correct...

I'm a die hard Plott man. I don't always appreciate the attitude that seems to be behind some posts like this but the truth represented is still true. Walkers are the dominate breed and their success is undeniable in the Nite hunts.

In fact I do appreciate posts like this one to a certain degree for one main reason: Hopefully it will fuel the flame in other non-Walkers breeds to step it up a notch. When a Walker man goes to a large hunt (Autumn Oaks, the World, etc.) he knows that he probably has to win the whole hunt to get his breed trophy. Non-Walker breed hunters know they can often get their breed trophy just by winning a cast and sometimes (especially Plotts hunters) can get their breed trophy by just showing up. I believe the high level of competiton within the Walker breed helps them to excel at the Nite hunts.

I can't speak for all Plott hunters and truthfully many of them have done more with their dogs than I may ever do. However, we must be willing to admit that our breed is a laughing stock to many in the Nite hunt circles. Instead of crying, whinning, or making % excuses, etc. I think we should allow the ridicule of others to stir us to do better as a breed.

So thanks for the criticism - we need it!

The one thing each of you should consider though is this: While you are criticizing non-Walker breeds you might look to see if one of your Walkers is winning the big ones. If not your dog isnt doing any better than my Plott.

Respectfully,

Tracey Jones

Ronald, I think the "treeing" in front of Walker is because in the beginning they were just plain old Fox Hounds. It wasn't until someone came up with the idea (and a bright one at that, i might add) to breed some Black and Tan in 'em. The tree comes from (outcrosses). If it weren't for the standards (color requirement), I'd say back early on the B&T owners would've been breeding to the Fox Hounds to try to get a little of the speed in their B&T's. We don't know that that is not what the intention was to start with. It just so happened that they were producing to much white on the dogs, so heck the cross is turning out tri-colored B&T's that have speed and will tree, might as well run with it, we just have to come up with a name for it. I don't know how much of that garbage is accurate, it's just a theory.

I do know for a fact that my grandaddy was a fox hunter and always had walkers. I can't remeber the formula something like 3/4 walker 1/8 b&t and 1/8 something else made the best dogs. He also said that from time to time they would get a pup that wouldn't run fox, all it would do was TREE and when they couldn't break it from coon. You know what they did with them? Yep they shot 'em.

When you're right you're right..........However if you're gonna speak the truth, speak the hole truth and not just part of it.

I have not pulled out the crusty 'ole calculator and done the math so we will use you're stats, 20 to 01.

Don't forget for every positive there is an oppisite and equal negative. That tells us that not only are there twenty good walkers to one good in any other breed that means that there also twenty cull walkers to one cull in any other breed.

The reason they put treeing in front of walkers is they tree everything,..possum, bobcats, fox, crows, slick tree, chipmunks, and every once-in-awhile a coon. shoot they will tree a deer if it'll climb a tree.lol, lol, lol

i dont want the word "treeing" in front of the black and tan breed name, i mean thats all treeing walkers know how to do is tree. I like it like it is for two reasons, pay attention now. American Black and Tan Coonhound. Yep just right, American at one end and Coonhound at the other end.

You can bet it will fuel the flame, especially when I draw Bruce and his Walker dog at a hunt. I thought we had him converted to English but I guess he does'nt like winning. LOL haha
